Job overview
The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) role will be based in the department of Virology. We are looking for applicants with clinical laboratory experience to participate in the activities of the department. The successful applicant will be trained to participate in the weekly bench duties performed by our MLA team, as well as wider involvement in quality, health and safety and service development.
Our Virology laboratory benefits from fully automated serology and molecular work solutions that run alongside our specialist molecular work areas, allowing us to put our patients and service users at the heart of an innovative and forward-thinking diagnostic service.
Main duties of the job
The MLA will be expected to receive and collate patient sample when they first arrive in the laboratory and to prepare samples received by the laboratory for analysis. The MLA will work with alongside a team of associate practitioners, BMS and Senior BMS. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an extended seven-day service 8am to 8pm and to participate in overnight working when required by the Trust in response to service needs such as increases in seasonal activity. Knowledge and experience of working in a Virology laboratory would be desirable and full training will be made available to the successful candidate. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To receive and collate patient’s samples when they first arrive in the laboratory
· To perform the preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis
· To store and keep detailed archive of samples
· To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory
· To perform any clerical duties required
· To bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples or any specimens that do not collate to the request form
· To prepare specimens received by the laboratory for analysis
· Work with the BMS staff to organise one's work
· To notify senior BMS staff of stock usage
· To use equipment safely in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and local standard operating procedures
· To report any adverse incidents or non-conformities or breaches of health and safety to a senior BMS
· Temperature monitoring of fridge, freezers, incubators and the environment
· Participation in Quality activities such as audit and document review

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Training to NVQ level 3 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- GCSE’s or equivalent in Maths, English and Sciences

- Previous experience in a laboratory environment
