An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Consultant based at the New Royal site of the Liverpool University Hospitals (LUHFT) NHS Foundation Trust, now one of the largest hospitals in the country.
This post will support and develop our nationally recognised Asthma service and the successful application will be able to demonstrate particular interest in this field of Respiratory Medicine. Within Respiratory Medicine, we have a wide and varied range of sub-specialities available including the opportunity to develop an EBUS service along with an interventional bronchoscopy service and our collaboration with Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital as part of our Lung Cancer Programme means we can offer you experience to collaborate and develop contacts outside of our own hospital.
We are able to offer flexible working conditions which include DCC sessions from home and our mid term plans incorporate a designated Respiratory Research Hub.
Main duties of the job
The department currently provides a general Respiratory service as well as specialist services including severe asthma, upper airways disease, pleural disease, sleep , lung cancer (in collaboration with Liverpool Heart and chest hospital (LHCH) and Aintree University Hospital (AUH), thoracoscopy, vasculitis, interstitial lung disease and community clinics.
With the move into our newly built state of the art hospital we are aspiring to deliver better and improved services to Asthma patients across the city. The new hospital will have a purpose-built respiratory support unit with 10 negatively pressured rooms co located with Acute and Emergency Medicine to enable rapid access to treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post will be based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site. The successful candidate will join a team of Respiratory Consultants in providing inpatient care on the Respiratory Unit by taking part in an on ward / off ward rotation and respiratory on call.
The role will also include delivering educational activities, raising the departmental research profile and actively driving further innovation.
The post holder will also be expected to participate in on going research trials and there will be opportunities to become principle investigator for upcoming clinical trials.
The post holder will have access to weekly radiology, Respiratory Directorate/ Governance meetings, Asthma MDTs and if required, access to the Regional MDT meetings held at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, attended by respiratory physicians, radiologists and thoracic surgeons.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- CCT in GIM/Respiratory Medicine or within 6 months of attaining CCT in above at time of interview or Specialist Registration with GMC in above
Desirable criteria
- MD or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in Respiratory Medicine with any subspecialty interest (preferably Severe Asthma)
