Vitreo-Retinal Fellow

Clinical Research Fellow

Job overview

St. Paul’s Eye Unit is a Division, part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a merger between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Trust and the Aintree Trust.  St. Paul’s is located on three sites:  the Royal, Aintree and the South Liverpool Treatment Centre at Garston.

Senior medical staff currently comprises almost 30 substantive consultants including five clinical academics at consultant level, three locum consultants, two associate specialists and six specialty doctors. In addition two consultants from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital participate in the strabismus services.  Doctors in training comprise two clinical lecturers, specialist trainees and sub-specialty fellow posts, including two surgical corneal fellows.

This fellowship role is a training post for a total of 12 months. This is a replacement for the fellows currently in post due to complete in August 2025. The Vitreoretinal fellows work within St Paul’s eye unit, covering VR emergencies, theatres and outpatients.   The subspecialty is led by Rumana Hussain and the Divisional Medical Director for the Ophthalmology is Mark Batterbury.

The Trust is altering its remuneration package for the vitreoretinal fellow post, to recognise the out-of-hours work performed over and above the basic working week. The detail of that package has not yet been agreed, but will lift the basic salary by approximately 30%. It is expected that the package will be in place by the time the successful candidate starts.

Main duties of the job

The vitreoretinal fellowship includes clinical sessions of 7 surgical and 3 outpatient based roles. In addition, the assessment and organisation of retinal emergencies, organisation of theatre lists and post-operative reviews. This is under the supervision of a team of 7 vitreoretinal consultants led by R Hussain.
