Job overview
The Principal Network Engineer has lead responsibility for voice and data network services delivered to users at LUHFT. Working together with the Network Manager they will ensure the provision of an efficient and reliable 24 hour 365 day service.
The post holder will be required to participate in an out of hours on-call rota, working autonomously to resolve all IT incidents critical to the Trust functioning out of normal working hours. This may involve visits to all areas where IT is used, which includes but not limited to patient areas such as wards, labs, theatres, AED etc.
Main duties of the job
The Principal Engineers will provide technical support at a senior level and, with appropriate support from the Network Manager, will be responsible for problem management within the networks team.
The post holder will provide specialist 2nd & 3rd line support and resolving incidents that are often very complex in nature across multiple disciplines.
The aim of this role is to provide Network/Telecoms support for the systems and services used by the Trust, resolving incidents passed from 2nd line support and supporting the Network Manager in order to maintain 'business as usual'. Where appropriate act as technical lead when delivering Trust project implementations.
In conjunction with the Network Manager the post holder will contribute towards the strategic development of voice and data network services and will provide a Technical Architect function in the planning and execution of the strategic development of other systems and services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To have lead responsibility for the operational management, implementation, and maintenance of voice and data communication networks within the Trust ensuring the provision of continuous and acceptable service to all end users.
To line manage the Network support staff. This will include dealing with standard line management issues such as performance management (including dealing with issues of poor performance), appraisal reporting, personal development, sickness and disciplinary issues where appropriate.
To manage the cabling requirements within the Trust and provide long term resilient infrastructures capable of supporting the joint needs for data and Telecommunications. This requires close liaison with the Trust’s Building Services and Facilities.
Manage and resolve incidents assigned to the Network and Telecoms Team in accordance with the Incident Management process. These incidents, which are by definition highly complex and will require specialist knowledge to resolve. This may require analysis and interpretation of data and/or statistical reports, to determine the root cause and provide adequate steps to resolve the problem. May also be required to manage and resolve some 1st line incidents
To be fully conversant with the Client/Server Infrastructure and system management utilities used in the Trust, performing advanced support and troubleshooting.
Together with the Network Manager contribute to the production of policies and procedures covering security and integrity of the Trust’s communication systems and networks to protect against unauthorised access or loss of revenue through system fraud. This includes the development and management of infrastructure and sensitive patient and staff information systems and the provision and maintenance of firewall protected sub-networks and highly bespoke systems on high security sites.
The post holder will work with the Service Desk Manager to obtain feedback on performance from the User base. All feedback will be acted upon to raise service levels and manage user expectations.
The post holder may be asked to supervise the work of colleagues and NHS cadets\work experience students, etc. Provides training from own or other disciplines on own subject area.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- CISCO Certified Network Professional (CCNP) (or working towards one) or equivalent knowledge of voice/data
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial knowledge and experience in telecoms and/or data networks and systems – particularly Cisco networking data networks
- Knowledge and experience of procurement procedures and contract negotiation, and the ability to write detailed output based specifications.
- Experience of being responsible for financial and physical assets, particularly the management ofcontracts and contractors
Desirable criteria
- Experience of clinical practices and working within specialist environments
Communication
Essential criteria
- Ability to deal with staff at all levels within a Informatics Service, its Partner Organisations and with service providers, service users, and professional bodies outside of the Informatics Service
- Ability to share technical knowledge with others and contribute to the training of more junior grades of staff
- Make formal presentations to technical and nontechnical groups on complex technical subjects not readily understood by them
