This is a post which will support the Hepatology service for 12 months initially as a locum appointment. The successful candidate will join 20 other Consultant colleagues in providing general and sub-speciality services through the Trust to its surrounding community and other referring hospitals in the Region. The Directorate spans the full range of Inpatient, Outpatient and Endoscopy Services and is also supported at a clinical level by 4 Nurse Consultants and 35 Specialist Nurses, 6 StRs, a Hepatology NTN, 1 x academic clinic lecturer and 5 F1/2 doctors.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post will be to provide lp further develop the HPB gastroenterology service along with the other WTE HPB and Hepatology gastroenterologists already in post that will meet the future demands for HPB Gastroenterology in a City Hospital Trust and Regional referral Centre. The core responsibilities will be to provide general and specialist HPB outpatient clinic services as well as deliver advanced endoscopic HPB therapy.
Alongside these responsibilities the successful applicant will provide on call out of hours endoscopy cover and inpatient hepatology consultant ward cover on a rotational basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Appointee, together with his or her colleagues will have a commitment to the provision of Hepatology services. Most of the work will be Hepatology outpatient clinic portal hypertension endoscopy and inpatient service. Ward cover is provided on a rotational basis supporting the management of the Hepatology Gastroenterology in-patients when the Consultants take part in ‘hot’ weeks for 2 weeks at a time. The majority (>90%) of our ward patients have primary GI disorders.
The successful candidate will also cover Endoscopy and Out-patient sessions. The expectation is to provide an on call commitment to support endoscopy and out of hours cover (on call sessions are recognised within our job plans in addition to the on call supplement).
Weekend on call work at the Royal site consists of either endoscopy sessions – in-patients performed by one consultant with another consultant covering the in-patient bed base. Weekend on call is currently delivered on a 1:8 rota at RLH site.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB ChB
- MB BS(or equivalent)
- MRCP (UK)
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
- Higher degree such as MD or PhD
Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with General Medical Council and licence to practise (or eligible for)
- On GMC specialist register/hold CCT (or proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview).
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in luminal gastroenterology
- Evidence of continuing medical education
Desirable criteria
- Subspecialty interest within IBD or nutrition
Teaching & training Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
- Training or education course
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of delivering training & education (PGCE)
- Train the Trainer qualification and experience
- Evidence of delivery of education to both undergraduate and postgraduate
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- High standard to support independent practice as a Consultant Gastroenterologist
- Endoscopic skills for acute GI bleeding
Desirable criteria
- To have a good understanding of ‘Good Medical Practice’ from the GMC
Audit Experience

- Understand principles of clinical audit.
- Proven track record in significant audit
