An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Diabetes department for the innovative post of Diabetes Technology Support Practitioner.
The successful applicant will assist clinicians in the delivery of the service providing education to people with diabetes including the use of various types of technology as well as providing clinicians with information during consultations
Working independently within a clinical setting the post holder will demonstrate technologies, ensure users are sufficiently competent in their use, provide advice for those experiencing any problems with the technology and order and maintain technology supplies within the department
The post will be linked to apprenticeship education and training
Main duties of the job
Work within the Diabetes Department assisting in the delivery of diabetes services within
specialist areas.
• Provide education to people with diabetes, including the use of various types of technology
• Arrange independent clinics in order to demonstrate diabetes technology and check that
people with diabetes are safe using it.
• Download and transfer information from various types of technology for clinicians to utilise
during clinical consultations. Working with people with diabetes to independently manage
their technology at home.
• Provide ‘troubleshooting’ advice for those who are have problems with their technology
• Maintain the ‘users’ of the technology platforms that are used by the diabetes clinic
• Order and maintain the technology supplies for the department • Follow standard operating
procedures

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Ensure appropriate prioritisation of work, in collaboration with the Diabetes Specialist Nurse
• To be competent in the application, support, removal and data downloading of glucose
monitoring devices and provide support patients using such devices.
• Competent in delivering education sessions to people with diabetes, and teaching patients
how to use Glucose sensors, insulin pumps and other such devices. This may involve
delivery to groups or individual patient sessions, utilising both virtual and face to face
methods.
• Working within competencies to support the Clinical Diabetes Team, undertaking clinical
responsibilities under the direction of the Diabetes Specialist Team.
• To maintain supplies for relevant tests and also for related therapeutic manoeuvres such as
supplies for intensive insulin therapy patients – eg blood glucose meters, sensors, and
insulin pumps.
• To liaise with internal, external providers and nursing staff, to ensure efficient processes.
The post holder will ensure that back up systems are implemented when electronic systems
fail.
• The Post Holder will use a variety of computer systems to order and access results. It is
expected that the individual will ensure accuracy in the requesting and reporting of results.
• The Post Holder will inform diabetes medical and nursing staff of any variance to results
from local parameters.
• Maintain equipment and undertake internal quality control checks.
• Where required liaise with medical engineering in terms of maintenance contracts,
concerning the checking of equipment, faults and repair. A system should be in place to
ensure there is a trail of equipment.
• Set up, maintain and download glucose monitoring systems and share this information with
the medical and nursing staff.
• Assist with the provision of health care for patients within the department
• Ensure that practice is in line with departmental policies and protocols within the clinical
area.
• Support the process of continuous quality improvement, assisting in audits etc.
MANAGEMENT
• Manage the clinical workload effectively; ensuring care and investigations are given the
appropriate priority.
• Contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost effective service, ensuring supplies
appropriately. Whilst also ensuring that equipment is well maintained with staff
understanding the use of such equipment.
• Assist with the monitoring of stock levels of clinical stores and technical equipment, relevant
to the role, resolving any shortfall as appropriate.

• The post holder will be expected to participate in the process of individual performance
review, to identify objectives for personal and service development.

• You are expected to contribute ideas for improvement in your own sphere of work for the
benefit of the department.
• Work within and accept responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence
and ensure clinical competence is acquired as new technologies are introduced.
• To be an active and committed member of the multidisciplinary team within the Department.
• Demonstrate an insight into own professional development, contributing to the process of
identifying own educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with line manager.

- NVQ 3 relevant area of study/equivalent
- BLS
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable previous Healthcare Experience
Desirable criteria
- Experience in phlebotomy/venepuncture
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Computer literate including, use of Microsoft Excel, Electronic Patient Record and other systems needed for the downloading and interpretation of monitoring data.
Desirable criteria
- Awareness and understanding of Diabetes Technician role in terms of the NHS Plan and recent initiatives within diabetes
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and manage own workload
- Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions. Adapts communication style as necessary and is able to work with others.
- Ability to use technology proficiently and to teach others how to use
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
