Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Registered Dental Therapist to work in the Restorative Department of Liverpool Dental Hospital for one day per week (7.5 hours), preferably a Thursday however, this can be discussed at interview. 

The post holder will work under supervision, carrying out active treatment for patients to prescriptions provided by Dental Consultants and Specialist Teams from the Restorative Dentistry Department. Restorative Dentistry duties will include provision of periodontal therapies, direct restorations, baseline records and photographs,  bleaching and composite modifications of malformed teeth within Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for patients in priority groups such a Cleft Lip and Palate, Developmental defects of the enamel and dentine and oral cancer

The post holder is responsible for providing specialist care and for contributing to the clinical management of patients, working in collaboration with consultants in order to improve patient care.

They are responsible for maintaining high standards of clinical care with reference to relevant research and evidence based practice. They maintain their own standard of practice and keep up to date adhering to CPD and appraisal protocols.

The JDPS specifies that this role is for both Restorative and Special Care Dentistry however, the successful candidate will only be required to work within the Restorative Department. 

Main duties of the job

Restorative Dentistry duties will include provision of periodontal therapies and direct restorations within Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for patients with Cleft Lip and Palate. There may also be a need on occasion to provide treatment for patients with developmental defects of the enamel and dentine, and oral cancer.

Ensuring patients meet the oral health standards for ongoing treatment in relation to the patient’s prescription or treatment plan.

Discuss and inform patients of the indications for on-going treatment, including risks, benefits of treatment and possible additional procedures required, in addition to the level of cooperation required by the patient.

Assess, plan and implement specialist care treatment plans in consultation with the Consultant & Specialist team.

Identify patients’ individual needs and beliefs when formulating a management plan ensuring holistic approach to care in collaboration with the Consultant, Specialist team, patients and their families as appropriate.

Promote health education and health promotion.

Utilise risk assessment skills to identify when there may be potential for damage to oral health and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

Act effectively in an emergency situation to ensure safety of patients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

practitioners in concert with nursing and ancillary staff.

Provide treatment to patients with a wide range of additional needs including barriers to understanding, medical compromise and physical disabilities.

Build upon skills to ensure that precision and accuracy in carrying out treatment is maintained.

Assess each patient’s health education needs individually providing advice and information on dental procedures as appropriate.

Promote health education and health promotion.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy or equivalent
  • Compliant with GDC CPD requirements
  • Oral Health Education and Oral Health Promotion Diploma/equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Other PG qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a dental team albeit in another role
  • Effective participation in clinical audits/service evaluations/quality improvement programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the community services or specific special care dentistry service
  • Experience of working in the community services or specific special care dentistry service
  • Experience in teaching
  • Experience in inhalation sedation

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Range of clinical skills as outlined in the GDC Scope of Practice
  • Understanding of quality improvement and its role in clinical practice
