We provide specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine including adult cystic fibrosis and diagnostic imaging, both in the hospital and out in the community.
We serve a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man, and increasingly we receive referrals from outside these areas for highly specialised services such as aortics.

Job overview
The potholder will be responsible for the provision of the delivery and evaluation of highly skilled individualised care to all patients whilst supporting and guiding junior staff. He / she will actively support senior colleagues and take charge of the Unit in the absence of a clinical Band 7 and will promote the role of Band 6 within critical care. The post holder will develop and maintain expert practitioner skills in the critical care environment in which excellence in clinical care flourishes. They will practice nursing within a clinical governance framework to create an environment in which excellence in clinical care flourishes.
The post holder should hold full NMC registration and have previous experience working in UK critical Care
Main duties of the job
Act as Team leader within the Post-Operative Critical Care Unit (POCCU) and Intensive Care Unit (ITU) on a shift basis
Provide leadership to service improvement cluster group you are allocated to
To supervise and instruct junior colleagues and be a resource for them in the clinical area.
In conjunction with other senior staff maintain an efficient communication system which will ensure dissemination of information to all staff and give them the opportunity to put forward ideas and suggestions for improvements in patient care.
To act as an effective role model and resource / advisor to colleagues in the delivery of nursing care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Act as Team leader within the Post-Operative Critical Care Unit (POCCU) and Intensive Care Unit (ITU) on a shift basis
Provide support to the Band 7 Group Leader in the management and development of staff
The post holder works unsupervised with the ability to care for all Level 2/3 critical care patients
In conjunction with clinical leads assist in ensuring that agreed patient management plans and standards of care are implemented, evaluated, and adhered to, thus providing high standards of care at all times
To supervise and instruct junior colleagues and be a resource for them in the clinical area
To act as an effective role model and resource / advisor to colleagues in the delivery of nursing care.
Promotes and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients in line with the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy and Policies.
Maintain a personal development plan and assist in the formulation and updating of personal development plans of junior colleagues.
Assist the lead in clinical lead in quality and risk management for critical care in audits and the development and implementation of action plans.

Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- RGN
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( Degree
- Post graduate Critical Care certificate.
- Teaching or Mentorship qualification or equivalent
- ILS provider
- Completion of Step 1 2 & 3 Critical Care Competencies
- full NMC registration
Desirable criteria
- Msc in Clinical Practice
- ALS Provider
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable Critical Care experience
- Development Band 6 Experience
- Participated in service development and implementation of change
- Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding
- Ability to communicate unpleasant and sensitive information
- Able to manage own workload, co-ordinate the work of others and work with minimal supervision
- Assertive
- Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the health care setting.
- Basic knowledge of financial management within a clinical setting
- Participation in staff management
- Knowledge of professional and NHS issues
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in both an Intensive Care and Cardiothoracic Setting
