We serve a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man, and increasingly we receive referrals from outside these areas for highly specialised services such as aortics.

Job overview

Applications are invited from radiologists who have experience in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic imaging. The successful applicant will have the opportunity for in-house training and work along with our team of ten experienced cardiothoracic radiologists and six cardiologists with imaging interest.

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) is a successful NHS Foundation Trust, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiothoracic diseases, with an outstanding group of cardiac and thoracic surgeons, radiologists and chest physicians and cardiologists. Our Trust has its own research department which provides excellent support for those colleagues interested in research and innovation.

This post was created to accommodate for the increase in the demand of cardiovascular and cardiothoracic imaging studies, securing an adequate workload to each of the consultants. Our department provides the best technology for cardiothoracic imaging, with two MRI scanners, including a wide bore, 1.5T cardiac optimized Siemens Sola MR scanner and a 3T VIDA Siemens and two dual energy CT scanners, (Siemens FORCE scanners) and it is fully integrated with PACS.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based at the LHCH. The total sessional commitment would be 10 – 12 PAs for a full-time appointee, but applicants who wish to work less than full time are also welcomed to apply.

Applicants must hold a certificate of completion of specialist training in radiology (CCST), or equivalent international specialist radiology training certificate and GMC registration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job is intended to be a full time (10 PA) post in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic imaging radiology, desirably (not essential) with experience US, doppler and lung biopsies at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. The job plan will include 1.5 SPA.

The draft job plan is outlined in the attached job description. 

The successful candidate will have full secretarial support, a personal computer (training available if required) and office accommodation in line with other consultants in the unit.

There is a significant commitment to research and audit and a training commitment to the SpR’s.

The trust supports the annual appraisal process and routine GMC revalidation for all consultants and all consultants undergo an annual job plan.  The appointee will be expected to work flexibly on the basis of the needs of the Clinical Services Division and the Trust.  The workload will be driven by the job planning process and be reviewed and changed appropriate to the requirements of the Trust by the Radiology Clinical Lead with the Divisional Head of Operations with ratification by the Medical Director.  It should be noted that full mentorship will be provided to the successful candidate.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Qualitfitcation

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (or Eligible for Registration within 3month).
  • FRCR or Equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate Degree

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT Radiology training
  • Training in chest imaging and Lung biopsies
  • OnCall duties (Often include cardiovascular imaging; aorta, cardiac and coronary imaging )
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in cardiothoracic imaging
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients in the Radiology Department.
Desirable criteria
  • An area sub-specialisation and willingness to innovate and develop services.
  • General / vascular, renal and carotid Doppler.
  • Stress cardiac MRI

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise and manage radiology speciality lists

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching at Postgraduate level.
  • Ability to teach image interpretation and reporting skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising SPR’s
  • Attendance of Training the Trainer Course.

Audit and Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of audit management or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to apply research outcomes in radiology practice
  • Peer reviewed publications.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance in Radiology
