Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

Alder Hey are offering an exciting opportunity to join the orthopaedic department at Alder Hey.  The department is one of the largest group of dedicated childrens' orthopaedic surgeons in Europe and enjoys international acclaim.  

The team are looking to appoint a full time locum paediatric orthopaedic surgeon for twelve months to help support our trauma service and address capacity issues within general orthopaedic outpatients.  Applicants will be expected to participate in on call which is a one in 8 weekday and one in 10 weekend.

Main duties of the job

It is envisaged that this post will attract 10 programmed activities per week (8.5 PA direct clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activities) As per Trust Policy for new consultants Increases beyond 1.5 SPA, in respect of appropriate activities can be negotiated by mutual agreement following annual job planning reviews.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a locum (10 PA) post based at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation. The successful 
applicant would join a team of 11 wte orthopaedic consultants, and 1 NIHR funded at Alder
Hey with 5 spinal Consultants.
The post-holder will report through the Clinical Lead to the Chief Executive with professional 
support from the Divisional Director.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC/registration
  • FRCS/MRCS/Equivalent degree
  • Experience in the management of paediatric trauma patients
  • Ability to supervise the clinical work of doctors in training and other staff
  • Ability to relate to patients and carers from a wide range of backgrounds and to empathise with their needs and concerns
Desirable criteria
  • Specialty experience and knowledge
