Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

Role Summary: The duties and responsibilities of the post holder will be that they are required to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to deliver a high quality Nuclear Medicine radiographic service for a variety of paediatric presentations.

The post holder will perform a wide range of duties associated with diagnostic Nuclear Medicine imaging, Bone Densitometry Imaging and non-imaging investigations. This will include the preparation and administration of radiopharmaceuticals and the acquisition and analysis of image and non-image patient data. The post holder will be responsible for supervising trainees and students and will be accountable for their work. The post holder will be required to follow departmental procedures.

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching hospital of the University of Liverpool and has been approved as a supra-regional centre for cardiac surgery, epilepsy surgery and major trauma amongst others. Alder Hey is one of Europe’s busiest children’s hospitals and we care for over 270,000 young people and their families every year.
We serve not only the local population of children, but we are the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics.
The hospital has approximately 270 beds including day beds for surgery. The paediatric services and expertise within the hospital are considerable and include paediatric ophthalmology, cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neonatology, neurology, neurosurgery, audiology, nephrology, respiratory medicine, oncology, trauma, general surgery and general medicine. The radiology department provides all imaging modalities, including nuclear medicine, CT, MRI and intervention.
We are looking for an adaptable, friendly and enthusiastic candidate who would embrace the challenge of working with Children. Previous experience in paediatrics imaging is essential

1. To perform a wide range of routine and non-routine radionuclide investigations, using a gamma camera/CT scanner to obtain high quality diagnostic images of the radiopharmaceutical distribution.
2. To perform bone densitometry imaging. Assessing the quality of images and ensure that they are of sufficient quality for the purposes intended. Presenting the images and data in a manner that facilitates efficient reporting. Altering display protocols as necessary to optimise image presentation.
3. To undertake routine and non-routine image processing and data analysis as required. Assessing the quality of images and ensure that they are of sufficient quality for the purposes intended. Presenting the images and data in a manner that facilitates efficient reporting. Altering display protocols as necessary to optimise image presentation.
4. In the absence of the Lead Radiographers organise, and at all other times take part in, patient scheduling and Radiographer workload. Ensure that a high-quality patient service is maintained through the efficient use of equipment, staff and other resources.
5. To undertake managerial duties of the Lead Radiographers in their absence.
6. Administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients by means of intravenous injection, orally or as a gas.
7. Provide the patient, parents/carers with a full explanation of the investigation while adhering to all written procedures covering such administrations and including patient identification, administered radioactivity, pregnancy, breast feeding and restriction to the patient’s actions post administration.
8. Liaise with scientific, medical, nursing and support staff, exchanging complex information relevant to the patient’s investigation.
9. Undertake the procedures required when people or the environment become contaminated with radioactive material. This includes procedures relating to the containment, decontamination and disposal of radioactive material arising from the spillage of a radiopharmaceutical source/injection or body fluid, including urine and blood, from a patient who had been administered a radiopharmaceutical.
10. Take an active role in the department’s radiation protection and quality assurance programmes. Perform daily quality control tests on imaging and non-imaging equipment to ensure correct performance.
11. Take an active role in the development and review of protocols and procedures, assisting with the development of new techniques and system of work.
12. Be aware of and conform to the relevant legislation governing the practice of Nuclear Medicine Technology and Bone Densitometry and following the safe working practices as described by local and national policy

- An in-depth knowledge of the practices and procedures associated with the use of radiopharmaceuticals for routine nuclear medicine investigations
- A good knowledge of the relevant anatomy and physiology and radiopharmaceutical biokinetics associated with routine nuclear medicine investigations.
- Sufficient understanding of the legislation and guidelines associated with the medical use of radioactive substances so as to ensure safe working practice.
