Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

An opportunity has arisen for  an experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist Quality Assistant to join the Pathology team at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a 0.6 WTE Band 6 post working 22.5 hours per week over 5 days

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest children’s hospitals in Western Europe. As a centre of excellence the trust treats more than 275,000 children a year from the North West, North Wales, Shropshire and the Isle of Man. The Histopathology department has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation and is accredited for training with the IBMS.  The department provides a full diagnostic routine and specialist paediatric histopathology service, fetal & perinatal post mortem and placental service. To practice as a specialist registered Biomedical Scientist with  experience in conducting Laboratory Medicine audits and Quality Management support. The post holder will perform a range of audit techniques across Pathology with an in depth knowledge of ISO15189 standard and other Pathology regulatory audit requirements.

The post holder will work autonomously to undertake audits, and in collaboration with the Quality Manager will schedule audits and record non-conformities and corrective and preventative actions on the Quality Management System.

The post holder will be required to maintain their Biomedical Scientist skills including HCPC registration and provide scientific services on patient samples as an aid to clinical diagnosis of paediatric disease. They will perform a range of diagnostic tests in the laboratory discipline of their training and provide technical support to Consultants and service users if required

You should be highly motivated, a good communicator and enjoy working as part of a Pathology wide team. The department has a proven track record of staff development in further education and actively encourages attendance at regional and national meetings.

  • To carry out all work to specified standards laid down by the professional bodies including Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), Health care Professions Council (HCPC), UK Accreditation Service (UKAS). 
  • The post holder is a specialist registered Biomedical Scientist (with significant post-registration experience) with specialist experience in conducting Laboratory Medicine audits and Quality Management support. The post holder will perform a range of audit techniques across Pathology with an in depth knowledge of ISO15189 standard and other Pathology regulatory audit requirements.
  • The post holder will work autonomously to undertake audits, and in collaboration with the Quality Manager will schedule audits and record non-conformities and corrective and preventative actions on the Quality Management System.
  • To support continuous improvement throughout Laboratory Medicine
  • To review and agree Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) with the Quality Manager and input onto the Quality Management System.
  • To assist with recording Root Cause Analysis categories on the Quality Management System using specialist knowledge of Pathology and regulatory requirements.
  • To participate in the routine and specialist work of the department rotating through all sections of the department working without supervision. 
  • To plan and organise own work, unsupervised, on a daily basis ensuring results are produced in an accurate and timely manner. This involves the adjustment of plans based on results generated. 
  • To participate in maintaining a system for the safe and confidential storage and retrieval of proper records and specimens both physically and electronically. 
  • To ensure data integrity when entering patient demographics onto the Meditech computer system. 
  • To Perform diagnostic tests that may require clinical intervention. 
  • To highlight urgent and clinically important results.  
  • To communicate effectively with colleagues and service users
  • To operate and maintain equipment daily including multitasking
  • To ensure proper and efficient use of equipment and consumables without wastage. 
  • To handle hazardous chemicals and reagents appropriately, daily according to COSHH regulations. 
  • To move and manipulate heavy objects whilst following appropriate manual handling guidelines.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of health and safety issues relating to pathology

Education and training

  • Qualified to BSc level in Biomedical sciences or other degree acceptable to the IBMS/HCPC or equivalent

  • To have gained the IBMS specialist (post-registration) diploma in a Pathology discipline or equivalent.
