Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. Job overview

This is a substantive 10 PA post, based at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust to join a highly specialist team of Consultant Paediatric Haematologists and Consultant Paediatric Oncologists.  The successful applicant would join a team of 4 Consultant Paediatric Haematologists and a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist with a Special Interest in Leukaemia as well as 4 Consultant Paediatric Oncologists. 

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post.  If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust, in consultation with Consultant colleagues. 

The post holder will report through the Clinical Lead to the Chief Executive with professional support from the Divisional Director.

There is a recruitment and retention premium for this post.

Main duties of the job

It is envisaged that this post will attract 10 programmed activities (PA’s) per week (8.5 PA direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 SPA – (supporting professional activities).  As per Trust Policy for new consultants increases beyond 1.5 SPA, in respect of appropriate activities can be negotiated by mutual agreement following annual job planning reviews.

This post holder will be involved in delivering clinical and laboratory haematology.  The specific leads for each area will be negotiated among the consultants depending on their specialist interests. There will also be a joint responsibility to ensure consultant medical input to the clinical laboratory service. On-call arrangements will consist of a 1:5 on call rota for non-malignant and laboratory haematology and a 1:8 on call rota for Haemato-Oncology unit cover.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to attend:

  • Haematology MDT weekly
  • Haemato-Oncology Unit communication meeting weekly
  • Leukaemia MDT weekly
  • Chemotherapy planning meeting weekly
  • Risk & Governance meetings for Laboratory Medicine and clinical specialties as appropriate
  • Laboratory Medicine Interdepartmental meetings which take place each month
  • Pathology Users’ Group quarterly 

The post holder will report through the Specialty Clinical Director for Medicine to the Chief Executive with professional support from the Director of Division of Medicine.  Clinical appraisal will be undertaken by a suitably senior consultant. 

Teaching & Academic role

The post holder would be expected to supervise junior staff and participate in the teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates and would be encouraged to develop research interests in their area of expertise.

Managerial responsibilities

Participate in departmental meetings related to strategic planning and take an active role in service review and development. 

CPD, Audit & Clinical Governance

The post holder would participate in CPD activity and appraisal consummate for with their role. Financial support is available via a Trust study leave budget.

 They will initiate and undertake appropriate audits as required within the department and take part in the clinical governance programme.
