Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

The Division of Medical Care has an exciting opportunity available for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to secure a permanent Assistant Service Manager role. 

The post holder will support  in the operational delivery and performance management to ensure key access targets are met, maintained and sustained. We are looking for a skilled manager with an operational background, excellent communication skills and a dedication for delivering high quality patient care.  The post holder must demonstrate the ability to manage administrative staff and have thorough knowledge of and experience in applying NHSE RTT Access to Care Standards.  

 

Main duties of the job

With support from the Service Manager, the post holder will work closely with the Clinical Leads  to support the development of the designated specialties. This will include performance and financial management and responding to the day to day operational issues. The post holder will also lead on a number of improvement projects and be integral to the day to day operational management of the services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Ensure effective processes and procedures are in place to monitor and track performance within the service line against the Division dashboard and Corporate Report.

• Where required, work within a weekly rota to ensure there is representation at the three daily bed meetings and work within own team to support patients coming into the Trust.

• To provide day-to-day operational management of Trust’s access targets, 18 weeks, cancer and diagnostics through appropriate implementation of the Trust’s Access Policy.

• Organise where appropriate, additional capacity as required with meticulous planning to ensure that all elements of service provision are considered to ensure capacity is maximised.

• Support  delivery of key performance targets within service group.

• Co-ordinate the operational management of services to ensure that all services provide high quality, effective services in an efficient manner.

• Ensure effective running of all aspects of the service line with management of waiting times in line with local and national targets.

• Support the analysis of data so that the Service/Care Group Lead and the Divisional Board have access to timely and accurate information on all key performance indicators

• Support the implementation of service development plans; the plans should combine the achievement of national/local targets with the aspirations of the specialty teams.

  • • Educated to degree level or equivalent knowledge

  • • Management qualification

Knowledge and experience of

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge and experience of managing and monitoring patients on the 18 Week RTT Pathway
  • • Demonstrable experience in an administrative & clerical role within a healthcare setting
  • • Demonstrable experience at supervisory level
  • • A demonstrable capacity and capability for operational management in an acute hospital environment including staff management, financial management and change management
  • • Demonstrable experience in delivering change and performance with and through your teams, by encouraging them in development and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively , ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience in developing Business Cases
