Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

Job overview

An exciting new opportunity has arisen to join Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust as Apprentice Senior Data Scientist in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). 

The post holder will be responsible for leading and managing multiple data science projects in IPC related population health, public health and epidemiology and will promote a data driven culture throughout the organisation. The post holder will develop, maintain and optimise advanced analytical and predictive models for IPC.

The post holder will be supported to complete a Level 7 Health and Care Specialist Apprenticeship Standard with JGA-Group.

This is a 22 month training post of 37.5 hours per week with Annexe 21 applied; 70% of the top of band 7 for the first year and 75% of the top of band 7 for the second year.  On successful completion of the Apprenticeship programme, you will become Senior Data Scientist IPC on Band 7.

As this is an apprenticeship position, this role is supported by an accompanying knowledge and skills development programme during which the post holder will gain the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours for this role. Learning will be delivered in the workplace through formal on and off the job training; allowing for the opportunity to practise new skills within a real working environment. On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the individual will have the right knowledge, skills behaviours they need for this role.

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Design and implement data visualisations and reports using PowerBI to effectively communicate insights in population health, public health, and epidemiology to IPC stakeholders.

Drive innovation in data science solutions in population health, public health, and epidemiology and promote a data-driven culture throughout the organisation

Ensure that systems, processes, and methodologies are followed to deliver effective monitoring, control, and support of service delivery. 

Provide reports on agreed schedules, including management and performance reports.

The post holder will work closely with clinicians and service managers in producing models that fit the problem; clearly understanding the problem, fine-tuning the solution, and appraising assumptions and limitations.

The post holder would be required to communicate highly complex information and analyses to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Level 2 Maths and English or equivalent qualifications (i.e. GCSEs grades A*- C/9 – 4, A-levels, Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills).
  • Required Mathematics Qualifications or Experience (at least one of the following as per the provider’s entry requirements): • Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) undergraduate degree • Social Sciences (e.g. Psychology, Geography, Economics, Accounting) undergraduate degree with Research Methods and/or Statistics and quantitative degree modules, and an undergraduate dissertation with a research or data analysis component • Level 4 or higher qualification in STEM or a related field that includes substantial mathematical content (e.g., Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Computing, Engineering, or Science) • Professional registration with FEDIP through the Association of Healthcare Analysts (AphA) at Practitioner or Senior Practitioner level • Equivalent analytical work experience (e.g. Band 6 or Band 7 data/senior analyst or similar role
