Band 7 Wheelchair Therapist -Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist

Due to retirement and a re-design of our structure, a rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Wheelchair Therapist (Band 7 Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) to join our exceptional multidisciplinary wheelchair team.

We are looking for a specialist registered Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist with significant relevant post graduate experience who has worked in an NHS wheelchair service and is able to demonstrate highly developed/ advanced knowledge and skills in wheelchair assessment/ prescription /provision, postural management and specialist seating.

You must have excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrate strong leadership behaviours and a coaching style approach, and be passionate about delivering the best possible care to wheelchair service users.

You will:

  • To undertake multifaceted and highly specialist and evidence-based assessments of adults and children who have complex postural and mobility problems and prescribe/ handover a range of wheelchairs and associated equipment, including specialist seating and powered wheelchairs to meet their personalised needs.
  • Work alongside the other Band 7s to provide clinical and professional leadership to the clinical team of wheelchair therapists, assistant practitioners, rehabilitation engineering technicians, therapy assistants and admin staff, including the line management and development of the team. 
  • Support the Service Lead and Support Manager with the operational delivery and development of the service ensuring a high quality safe, effective and responsive service which is personalised.
  • Although you will be based in West Cheshire, you will required to work across both our locations, working closely with the other Band 7s to deliver a seamless and consistent service across Wirral and West Cheshire.

We deliver NHS wheelchair services to adults and children living in Wirral and West Cheshire for Cheshire Merseyside Integrated Commissioning Board (ICB); and have nearly 8,000 wheelchair users with equipment on issue from our service. For the main responsibilities of the post please refer to the attached Job Description, and please ensure that your supporting information in your application reflects how you meet the person specification for role. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage a caseload of highly specialist cases/ wheelchair service users who have highly complex postural management and seating needs, taking the lead on specialist seating clinics and powered wheelchair provision. 
  • Undertake independent assessment and management of wheelchair service users (adults and children) and make complex clinical decisions regarding wheelchair service user management and clinical outcomes.
  • Utilise advanced clinical skills in the assessment and formulation of prescriptions for wheelchairs and associated products, working within the local eligibility criteria. 
  • Carry out detailed/ complex risk assessments and the management/ reporting of clinical risks.
  • Offer people who are eligible for new/ re-provision of an NHS wheelchair a personal wheelchair budget in line with legislation and service operating model.
  • Act as a source of expertise in the field of postural management, seating and pressure care. 
  • Have oversight of the triage of referrals to the wheelchair service.
  • Provide clinical leadership to the team, and balance clinical and management demands effectively.
  • Consider the budget demands when prescribing/ ordering equipment. 
  • To take responsibility for own CPD and keep up to date with clinical practice and wheelchair products.
  • Work closely with the Service Support Manager to ensure the smooth running of the service.
  • Support the on-going development of the service, leading on identified quality improvement projects.
