Job overview

We are recruiting for a Clinical Psychologist in Chronic Pain who wishes to join our friendly and psychologically-minded MDT. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients receive quality and compassionate care, and work with us to ensure the Trust values of Caring, Respect, Teamwork and Improvement are met.   

 

The successful candidate will be confident in providing individual and group based psychological therapies to individuals with complex pain. There will also be opportunity to facilitate sessions on the pain management programmes, as well as help shape the future development of this.   

 

The chronic pain service includes physio, OT, assistant psychologist, therapies assistant and a consultant medic. The team has in recent years undertaken a restructuring exercise and is now aiming to increase the psychology resource offered to those with persistent pain and so are looking to increase our staffing in line with this.   

 

This would be an ideal job for those newly or recently qualified, or for anyone who has been working post-qualification and wishes to develop their skills in working within chronic pain.  You will be well supported by the team and the lead psychologist who all hold the values of compassion, kindness, ambition and respect and who all hold the patients’ and each other’s wellbeing at the heart of everything they do.

Main duties of the job

You will form part of the multidisciplinary team and will provide advice and consultation on psychological aspects of pain management to both patients and other clinicians. This will include participating in both multidisciplinary assessments and individual psychological assessments and evidence-based psychological interventions. The post holder will be clinically responsible for an individual caseload as well as contributing to the development and delivery of group-based pain management interventions.

There will be monthly supervision from the Principal Clinical Psychologist as well as wider network support from the North West Pain Psychologists’ Special Interest Group and from other clinical psychologists working in adult mental health across Wirral. You will be expected and supported to engage with these networks to develop your skills and experience within the role.   

 

The post involves taking an active part in audit, research and development of the service as well as contributing to any training needs around this both within the team and wider within the trust and local community.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of postgraduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained before 1969) as accredited by the BPS, or due to qualify in the near future.
  • Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care professions Council (HCPC) or imminently eligible to register.
  • Experience of engaging complex patients in psychological formulation and therapy.
  • Previous experience of delivering psychological assessments and interventions with clients with health problems.
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT.
  • Experience of contributing a psychological perspective within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
Desirable criteria
  • Pre qualification training and experience in research methodology and/or other fields of applied psychology in a healthcare setting eg MSc in Health Psychology.
  • Post doctoral training in the supervision of Trainee Clinical Psychologists.
  • Experience of working within a medical setting where the medical model narrative is predominant.
  • Experience of working with people living with persistent pain.
  • Experience of facilitating therapy groups or pain management groups.
  • Experience of challenging accepted practice.
  • Experience of supervising other health care professionals and /or assistant psychologists.
  • Experience of teaching or training within a healthcare setting.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to deliver evidence based psychological therapy to this population.
  • Knowledge of relevant guidelines and legislation pertaining to this patient population.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
  • Familiarity with NHS IT patient administration systems. Confidence with using standard software packages such as Microsoft Office including Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with physical health problems, particularly persistent pain.
  • General knowledge of models and theories in this patient population, with the ability to use these appropriately within assessments to arrive at collaborative formulations
  • Able to interact effectively with clients, relatives and carers to provide psychological support as indicated by the clinical formulation.
  • Ability to self-reflect and use clinical supervision appropriately.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the sociopolitical context of the NHS and the impact this can have for those accessing (and not accessing) NHS services.
