Job overview

We are looking for a specialist respiratory nurse to join our integrated team based at Wythenshawe Hospital. We are a consultant led team of physiotherapists, nurses, support workers who run a number of specialist respiratory services in South Manchester including

COPD Community admission avoidance/early supported discharge (community home visits)

In patient reviews of COPD and asthma patients

Specialist home oxygen assessment 

Accredited pulmonary rehabilitation service

The service hours are 7 days,  8am-6pm with flexible hours available to meet these times

CAR DRIVER FOR BUSINESS USE AND UK VALID DRIVING LICENCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across all services provided and be supported to deliver best practice care. We have a complex respiratory caseload where we provide specialist respiratory assessment and treatment plans with MDT/consultant guidance.  Our team seek to innovatively drive  standards of patient care through quality improvement projects. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team. Our pulmonary rehabilitation service recently became nationally accredited part of only a small number of services to achieve this standard. We use evidence based practice to guide care in the community. The team has a role in assessing and following up patients requiring home oxygen.  The COPD and asthma reviews for in-patients follow the requirements of the discharge bundle of care contributing to the National Respiratory Audit Programme.

Applicants will be expected to develop a sound knowledge of respiratory conditions and to undertake appropriate specialist training within the post.  MFT as an organization have many education opportunities to access.  Candidates are expected to have an interest in respiratory care and experience with COPD patients. All applicants will have excellent communication skills and be able to work autonomously, seeking support as required. Delivering structured group patient education is an expectation of the role.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant professional qualification BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy or equivalent / professional qualification RN/RGN
  • Active HPC registration/NMC pin
  • Evidence of recent CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced respiratory qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in chronic lung disease setting specifically COPD minimum of 6 months
  • Experience at band 5 (or equivalent) for a minimum of 2 years
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT
  • Evidence of delivering teaching and education to staff groups and patients
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of community working
  • Experience of service development and evaluation of service standards through clinical audit and research.
  • Experience of performing exercise testing and evaluation of results
  • Experience of NHS in the UK

IM&T

Essential criteria
  • Competent IT skills (eg microsoft excel, word, powerpoint)
  • Good knowledge of clinical information systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with current systems (EPR, EMIS, Graphnet)

Other

Essential criteria
  • Full UK driving licence and use of own vehicle for business purposes
Desirable criteria
  • Undertaken a leadership programme
  • Evidence of involvement in service improvement
  • Understanding a 7 day service working across different sites
