Locum Consultant in Paediatrics with an interest in Diabetics

General Clinical Duties

The appointee will be contracted for an average of 10 programmed activities per week. Job plan will be agreed on commencement of post. It will include:

  • 1 in 7 hot weeks and 1 in 7 on call with weekend in General paediatrics (TBC)
  • In ‘non hot weeks’ 2 to 3 clinics a week: General paediatrics new & follow-up and Diabetes clinics.
  • Core CPD and any remaining SPA to contribute to activities of the department. You will be educational supervisor for 1 or 2 trainees, contribute to induction and post graduate education, undergraduate education, governance activities, audit and research. A new Job planning framework has been agreed with LNC recently.
  • 1 in 7 resident evenings till 8PM (Mon- Friday) as resident consultant for POAU & admissions (TBC).

This post is based at Wythenshawe hospital, there will be a need for cross site working . We would like the post holder to support the paediatric Diabetes  service.

Currently the service Hot week runs from 5 pm Friday till 5 pm the following Friday. During the working week there is one consultant on for general paediatrics, covering from 8.30am-5pm weekdays. The Hot week consultant is responsible for leading a daily ward round, review admitted patients (ensuring RCPCH 7 day service standard met), attend MDT/strategy meetings, supervise trainees and be available for all paediatric emergencies at Wythenshawe and also be available to support trainees in management of acute emergencies from 0830 to 1700. After 1700 the on call consultant will take responsibility. During hotweek you will be responsible for all general paediatric admissions, HDU patients, POAU referrals and attendance in ED for any emergency.  Day to day decisions about the management of common acute paediatric problems are discussed on the daily morning ward round which is led by a consultant every day including weekends and bank holidays. There are guidelines for the treatment of common paediatric conditions. General Paediatric Consultants lead on the care of children with safeguarding issues. They will also review patients under the surgical teams when help is needed in management of medical problems. The consultant on-call will be called to attend the Emergency Department to advice on management of paediatric medical emergencies out of hours.

Qualifications and Training

  • MBChB or equivalent
  • Postgraduate qualification - MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Completion of general professional training (paediatric medicine)
  • Completion of higher specialist training in paediatric medicine. Must be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT or equivalent at the time of interview.
  • Level 3 Training Special Interest Module (SPIN) in Paediatric Diabetics or equivalent

Teaching and Audit
