Senior Occupational Therapist

Job overview

The post holder will hold a caseload of service users who’s needs are around Occupational identity, performance and participation. They will provide assessment and intervention aimed at improving these areas in order for the service users to live the lives they want and need.  The post holder will be the names care coordinator for identified clients.  The post holder will be required to work weekends, bank holidays and duty on a rota basis.

Main duties of the job

      To be a key part of the occupational therapy team within Salford Older Adult CMHT, providing occupational therapy assessment and intervention for older adults who present with organic and functional mental health problems.

·            To have a caseload of older adults with mental health problems, using evidence-based, client-centred principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and record interventions.

·            To provide support, assistance and advice to carers of older adults with mental health problems.

·            To maintain departmental occupational therapy service standards and contribute to the development of the Trust occupational therapy service as a whole.

·            To support the Senior Practitioner for Occupational Therapy in the planning, delivery, development and evaluation of the occupational therapy service within Salford Older Adult CMHT.

·            To provide an occupational therapy perspective in the area of older adult mental health to the MDT, Social Services, and other organisations.

·            To contribute within the wider MDT in the development of clear care pathways regarding support, care and treatment of older adults with mental health problems.

·            To undertake the role of Clinical Educator for occupational therapy students on fieldwork placements.

·            To provide junior Occupational Therapists with support; utilising supervision, appraisal systems and training.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/ Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Documented evidence of recent Relevant Continuing Professional Development
  • HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Fieldwork Education qualification/training
  • Evidence of post registration training in Mental Health

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience as an Occupational Therapist
  • Relevant clinical experience working in Mental Health, including experience in Older Adults and Dementia Care.
  • Experience of working autonomously and able to set own priorities in a demanding environment
  • Experience of effective multi -disciplinary team working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a community setting

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Effective Communication, liaison and negotiation skills
  • Good knowledge of mental health legislation, policy and current best practice, and demonstration and understanding of the implications for Occupational Therapy
