PART TIME (30 HOURS PER WEEK) - PERMANENT - BAND 6
The post holder has a key leadership and management role at a senior level, and will assist the unit manager in providing specialist skills and knowledge in SACT and other supportive treatments to support the organisation and delivery of care for patients within the Laurel Suite. The post holder will support the unit manager in all aspects of the department management and have a key role in co-ordinating and developing the nursing team ensuring that patients receive the required standard of care. The post holder will support the unit manager in ensuring all staff comply with Trust policies/ procedures and professional and legal standards. The post holder will support and lead the Haematology/Oncology team on a day to day basis, demonstrating all the key skills outlined in the job description.
The post holder will be expected to participate fully in their personal development and review process in order to achieve the skills required to deliver the role effectively and efficiently. As a member of the team you will be expected to be proficient in phlebotomy, cannulation and administration of all types of cytotoxic drugs to level 3 (UKONS) and to support other members of the nursing team to achieve the same proficiencies
Main duties of the job
· To effectively co-ordinate care to ensure a seamless and timely pathway of care for patients
· Provide clinical leadership (and line management of staff in the absence of the unit manager)
· Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within the department and with relevant external agencies or individuals (ie the wider MDT/aseptics department).
· Organise own workload and adjust priorities in response to issues arising in the workplace.
· Recognise and respond appropriately to issues which require urgent or immediate attention
· Deputise for the unit manager as required and lead the team in the absence of the unit manager
· Responsibility for the day to day running and management of the Haematology & Oncology patients on Laurel Suite and effective appointment planning for future treatments.
· Maintain ward management records and produce timely management reports at the request of the unit manager or as required in his/ her absence.
· Support the management of roster allocation for present and future shifts in order to provide safe staffing levels in line with the agreed workforce model.
· Assist the unit manager in supporting and contributing to agreed developments within the Business Group
· Ensure the efficient use of ward resources e.g. bank staff.
· Manage the Haematology and Oncology scheduling system ensuring capacity is used efficiently.

Registration/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full NMC nursing registration
- Degree in nursing or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Post registration education in cancer/SACT/ oncology or haematology
Skills
Essential criteria
- Proficient in administration of SACT / UKONS assessed
- Skills in the management of SACT side effects
- Organisational abilities/prioritisation skills
Desirable criteria
- UKONS assessor sign off
- Awareness of implementing change and willingness to learn new skills
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience at Band 5 – at least 3 years
- Previous experience in haematology and oncology setting
- Evidence of ability to effectively co-ordinate a team
Desirable criteria
- Able to demonstrate awareness of or evidence of clinical governance
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of current professional nursing issues in oncology and haematology and cancer care
