Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity to welcome a full-time Consultant into the Geriatric Medicine team and the successful applicants will join our expanding team of motivated Consultants.
Candidates with a CCT or CESR in Geriatric Medicine are encouraged to apply. Those working towards the CESR qualification who already have experience working at consultant level are encouraged to contact the department to discuss other options. We can also accept applicants who are within 6 months of achieving a CCT in Geriatric Medicine.

Main duties of the job
- Provide senior clinical decision-making on a geriatric ward designated for patients who are not ready for immediate discharge or transfer, including conducting consultant ward and board rounds.
- Offer clinical support for specialist outpatient services as agreed with the service.
- Participate in the out of hours General Internal Medicine Consultant Rota.
- Monitor and ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of clinical practice, actively participating in audits.
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
- Contribute and lead on transformational pieces of work leading teams through change as the pathways evolve.
The post holders will be supported and responsible for supervision of junior/middle grade medical staff. The successful post holder will be supported to undertake formal training in educational supervision.
The post holders will build on the existing good relationships with primary and community care services so that frail, older people have risk factors identified and can be signposted to services that will support them, to maintain their independence as close to home as possible.
This may include co-ordination of specialist multi-disciplinary meetings which include primary and community care services to ensure that patients have robust care plans which help them to stay healthy at home for as long as possible.

- If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary
In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with GMC MRCP
- Relevant CCT or entry on specialist register expected within 6 months or applied for entry.
Desirable criteria
- SCE e.g. Geriatric Medicine (D)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- 4-5 years training at St3+ level in GIM and Geriatric Medicine
- Interest and significant experience in Geriatric Medicine and /Frailty
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to make decisions at Consultant level and takes full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
