Job overview

The modernisation of the NHS to provide first-class patient care requires that the information exchanged between healthcare professionals, and across NHS organisations, is always of a consistently high quality. To ensure confidence in any information produced as part of the clinical process, the underlying data must be accurate and fit for purpose.

Our Clinical Coding Auditors play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of our coded clinical data. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate Clinical Coding Auditor to join our clinical coding team at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be an excellent clinical coder - as well as being organised, methodical and driven, with a very keen eye for detail.

All applicants must hold Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status and have  a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience of working in a clinical coding department.

For current NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditors – applicants with this certification will commence on AFC Band 6.

If you are not NHS England qualified, you will be recruited into the post on AFC Band 5 and will progress to Band 6 upon successfully obtaining NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditor Status, which you will be expected to acheive within 18 months- 2 years of appointment.

Main duties of the job

To carry out the Clinical Coding Audit function for the trust, under the supervision of the Clinical Coding Operational Manager and as commissioned by the Head of Clinical Coding.

To carry out validation of the coded data, under the supervision of the Clinical Coding Operational Manager.

Undertake targeted clinical coding audits for all specialties across the Trust and clinical coders within the department, ensuring that the coded clinical data conforms to the current National Clinical Coding Standards.

As part of this role you will be required to feedback coding errors and flag poor practice both in coding and documentation standards. In order to acheive this, you will work closely with the Operational Clinical Coding Manager, Clinical Coding Training Manager and the wider clinical coding management team.

As a Clinical Coding Auditor, you will liaise with clinical coders, clinicians and managers, to enhance the accuracy and completeness of clinical coding.

As part of the audit team you will provide expert clinical coding advice to the coding team, clinicians, managers and other staff.

The post-holder will advise on and assist in the implementation of any new guidance and ensure that all local policies are updated in line with national standards.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • National Clinical Coding Qualification
  • Accredited Clinical Coding Auditor Qualification
  • Minimum A'Level qualifications including Biology/Human Biology/PE or equivalent, or other relevant clinical coding experience
  • Continued professional development, including Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course within last 3 years
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership/Management certificate
  • AMSPAR Medical Terminology Qualification or equivalent

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology
  • Specialist knowledge of National Clinical Coding Standards
  • Knowledge of Data Security & Protection Toolkit standards
  • Knowledge of the impact of clinical coding on Healthcare Resource (HRGs) and mortality measures
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of how acute hospital services function in relation to the patient admission/transer/discharge journey
  • Knowledge of the importance of confidentiality, the Data Protection Act, and Caldicott Principles

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of conducting clinical coding audits at coder/specialty/consultant level
  • Significant practical coding experience across a wide range of complex medical and surgical specialties
  • Experience of mentoring trainee coders
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using both paper and electronic records to extract clinical information
  • Experience of working with clinicians and divisional managers, and contributing in meetings
  • Experience of using benchmarking systems, e.g. HED

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to confidently audit coded data, providing feedback to all levels of staff
  • Ability to analyse and abstract detailed information from electronic and written records
  • Ability to apply national standards and local coding policies across a wide range of specialties and highly complex coding scenarios
  • Ability to work to a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail and demonstrate DSPT ‘standards exceeded’ level in audits
  • Ability to provide coding advice and support to less experienced clinical coders
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to relay complex coding information to a variety of staff at all levels
  • Ability to prioritise, cope with pressure and work to deadlines
  • Able to work autonomously and effectively as part of a team
  • Good IT skills and able to use Microsoft Office applications
