Job overview
An opportunity has arisen at Salford Royal Hospital for the appointment of a Locum Consultant Oesophagogastric (OG) Surgeon (cancer and complex benign disease) post for 12 months, with a view to a substantive position. The successful candidate will join an established team of 8 OG surgeons working within the recently centralised Greater Manchester OG Service (GMOGS).
Salford Royal Hospital currently serves the population of Salford (approx. 240,000 people) but may soon be expected to deliver EGS as a high acuity site to the populations of Bolton and Wigan (890,000 people in total) as part of the Healthier Together initiative. It is also the nominated Major Trauma site for Greater Manchester and general surgery provides surgical support for this service.
Main duties of the job
It is proposed that the appointees will provide 10 PA’s per week (which will include outpatient clinics, operating theatre lists, and administration). The job plan will be a flexible job plan.
All Consultants will be allocated 1 core SPA per week for professional development (CPD), Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit.
Additional SPA time will be made available to Consultants on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and subsequently reviewed

Essential / Desirable
Essential criteria
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of date of interview), CESR or European Community Rights Licensed with the GMC
- Evidence of expertise and experience in Complex benign upper GI surgery
- JAG accreditation in diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy
- Post-CCT Fellowship
- Membership of specialist society e.g.: AUGIS, ASGBI To be formally recognised as Clinical Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Stand
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeps up to date with medical advances.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the core legal, ethical and political issues which govern medical practice
- Experience of recent and current research/ relevant publications.
- Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
Essential / Desirable
Essential criteria
- Previous appointments that provided necessary professional training in Oesophagogastric cancer surgery including at least two years at Senior SpR level (or equivalent)
