Band 7

Job overview

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our Children's Speech and Language Therapy Team in Oldham.

As a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with a specialism in Autism and Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) you will be working with school-aged children with complex needs. You will primarily work with a caseload of students from 5-19 years old who attend special schools. This will include students with a wide range of ability – some of whom will have a learning disability and some who have complex needs that are primarily around Autism and SEMH. You will have access to support from other members of the team to develop your skills within this pathway. This post is for 0.5 WTE but there is some additional optional time available (0.2 WTE) working with pre-school children with complex needs, many of whom are within the ASC diagnostic process, if this is of interest to the right candidate.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work with families, schools and professionals providing high-quality care for children and families.
  • Access professional development, training and supervision to develop your clinical specialism.
  • Join our induction programme and take part in our staff well-being initiative.

We are happy to consider part time hours or flexible working requests.

If this sounds right for you, please apply! Visits or further discussion about the role welcome.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high level of clinical expertise in managing a caseload of preschool and school aged children and young people with complex speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To develop and implement individualised care plans, based on best practice, which reflect the specialist nature of the intervention required to meet the needs of cases.
  • To develop and communicate appropriate strategies to facilitate the child’s communicative effectiveness, including work in multidisciplinary teams and joint working with trained interpreters and bilingual assistants in languages other than English, overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers to communication and acceptance.
  • This will also involve a highly specialist clinical advisory role to specialist and non-specialist therapists, providing second opinions, shadowing, mentoring and clinical supervision as well as contributing to clinical support interest groups and peer audit.
  • To provide leadership and support to junior members of the team including one to one supervision, IPDR, clinical supervision and first line management response where required.  To be responsible for and continuing own and other’s professional development and learning, accessing supervision and being aware of learning needs and service needs.
