Perineal Pelvic Health Midwife

The purpose of this role is to lead and support the local implementation of perinatal pelvic health service (PPHS).  The post holder will be working as the lead midwifery practitioner responsible for the development and oversight of high-quality care which aims to reduce anal sphincter damage, perineal injury and improve repair during childbirth.

The post holder will work with and support the Obstetric team in the day-to-day management of the OASI Perineal service and work with the multidisciplinary team to continually monitor the quality of care that women receive and improve outcomes in line with the PPHS objectives.


The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring appropriate care pathways for those women who experience Pelvic Girdle Pain.  They will work directly with complex patients, promoting health improvement in both prevention and recovery alongside working in partnership with the Specialist Physiotherapists. The post holder will develop and review pathways and provide relevant training to the wider team. 


The PPHS midwife will work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team to identify gaps in midwifery and obstetric practice and contribute to the improvement of services on a local, regional and nationally scale.

To support the development and implementation of PPHS within the organisation working with colleagues across Greater Manchester and align to the PPHS Wave 3 Implementer programme.


To work closely with and bring together physiotherapy services in the trust that deliver PPHS.


To implement and provide specialist evidence-based care for women with childbirth related perineal trauma (CRPT), OASI and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction, including the provision of endoanal ultrasound scans.


To act as a significant educational resource, to health professionals in CRPT, OASI and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction and liaise with women’s health physiotherapists in providing training to midwives on pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME) in order that they can deliver appropriate preventive antenatal PFME guidance. 


Development and promotion of Trust guidelines and protocols for women requiring perineal suturing and bladder care and OASI, adopting a multi professional approach. 


To improve governance, patient safety and continuity of care in women with obstetric pelvic floor injury and promote education within maternity services to continue to improve intrapartum and postpartum perineal and bladder care and to support further reduction in rates of perinatal pelvic health problems

Provide a visible clinical leadership presence within the Trust and the wider Greater Manchester PPHS network. 

Promote the role of the midwife and provide advice on policy and guidelines concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and associated complexities locally.Advise and provide clinical support for midwives in complex cases.

Support improvements in and development of maternity services, to improve the experience for women, their families, and staff.

Develop care pathways and lead on the development and implementation of a variety of action plans reviewing maternity services in partnership with the Head/ Deputy of Midwifery / Consultant Midwife and in line with internal governance reporting and external working groups. 

Ensure local and national policy is disseminated, understood, and implemented.

Promote the benefit of research within the midwifery profession, sharing evidence through a variety of learning events.
