An exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor in Infection to join the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Infection Sciences team and provide support for Infection services based at Royal Oldham Hospital and Salford Royal Hospital. The post-holder may also be required to cover Infection duties at other locations within the network. 

The current on-call rota is 1 in 5 (subject to job planning) covering the localities of Oldham, Rochdale, and Bury (BRO) and Care Organisations. The NCA has Infection Science laboratories currently based at Salford and Oldham to provide medical microbiology and virology services to areas covered by NCA Infection Sciences. 

 As a versatile and enthusiastic Speciality Doctor, you must have MBBS or equivalent medical qualification and be eligible to live and work in the UK. You shall have full GMC registration and license to practise and higher qualifications such as MRCP, MD and FRCPath 1 would be desirable. 

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence others in clinical and management roles. You will be able to work independently and be able to demonstrate leadership where appropriate. Candidate should have a demonstrable understanding of the principles and importance of audit and research. Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The main purpose of the job is to provide and support a clinical infection service to the NCA.  This includes the requirement to advise on diagnosis and management of infection, to liaise with laboratory staff to assist with the reporting of organisms of medical importance and interpretation, validation and verification of results.  Infection Control will be an integral part of the job including      close working with the infection, prevention and control nursing team. You will be working closely with Anti-microbial Pharmacists and contribute to the anti-microbial stewardship programme.

Other duties include telephone consultations with clinical staff, ward visits and rounds including Critical Care, Contribution to Antibiotic Stewardship including antibiotic ward rounds, liaison with laboratory staff and support of infection control services including Root Cause Analysis of infections such as C.difficile and MRSA.

An initial and then annual review of duties will take place with the Clinical Lead for Microbiology as part of the job planning process.   The precise arrangements will depend on the needs of the service, the interests of the individual and agreement with colleagues: flexibility is expected.

If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence

Experience

  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation or equivalent competencies
  • At least 4 years of post-graduate medical experience or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge base and sound clinical judgement
  • Demonstrates basic awareness of importance and impact of infection on clinical practice

  • Experience of clinical specialties where there is a significant component of infection, e.g. Infectious Diseases/ medical microbiology
  • Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to medical microbiology/virology
