Job overview

The HSDU at The Royal Oldham Hospital are looking for a self-motivated and reliable individual to train as a Decontamination Technician. 

You will be joining a busy team to undertake decontamination science duties in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.

Full training will be given in line with the departments ISO 13485 Accreditation, to allow you to assist in the safe and efficient delivery of decontamination services. You will receive continuous development and the opportunity to enhance your career within the decontamination field.

You will demonstrate a commitment and interest within the speciality and have proven ability to work within a challenging environment as part of a dedicated team. 

You will have strong verbal skills and the ability to communicate with staff at all levels, often being the main contact between the HSDU and service users. 

If you have excellent organisational skills, communication skills and are able to deal with difficult situations as they arise, this post could be for you.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake decontamination science duties and assist (under supervision) the workforce of Decontamination Technician Supervisors, in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.
  • To carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilization of reusable medical devices. Record all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems (tracking and tracing) database.
  • Work in accordance with the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
  • To plan your own workload with limited supervision.
  • The role involves exposure to blood and body fluids.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • A working knowledge of keyboard, typing and computer skills.
  • Experience of applying concentration during repetitive tasks.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a healthcare setting
  • Knowledge and experience in decontamination or infection prevention.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work to Standard Operating Procedures.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE in English, Maths and Science at Grade C or above, a level 2 vocational qualification or equivalent level of knowledge.
