Staff Nurse

Band 5

Job overview

Are you an enthusiastic, experienced nurse with an interest in oncology?

Would you like to join our successful team and deliver the best patient care in our purpose built

SACT day unit?

As a team we treat up to 180 patients per day via the SACT Day Unit and Peripheral Sites

We offer treatments to all solid tumour disease groups on our day case unit at The Christie  and our peripheral sites  at St Ann’s (Little Hulton),  St Luke’s ( Winsford) , Tameside Macmillan Unit, Dr Kershaw’s (Oldham) and Bury Hospice

On appointment you would receive a comprehensive 8-week supernumerary training package, in which you have exposure to different anti-cancer treatments in different disease group fields and complete the UKONS passport. You will gain experience in treating a variety of patients with potentially curative diseases, alongside palliative and clinical trial treatments.

As part of the induction program, you will also have the opportunity to work at our SACT peripheral sites. You will be also given the opportunity to work within our nurse led clinics such as pre assessment, pre-treatment consultation and oral SACT clinics

We would encourage you to come and visit the unit prior to interview.

Main duties of the job

We are an innovative and forward-thinking unit, which is dedicated   to reviewing and developing the ways that we work for the needs of our patients. We are welcoming to new ideas and would look forward to working with nurses who have a genuine passion for caring for patients in this field.

We are open  6 days a week, Monday-Friday 8am until 8pm and Saturday from 8am until 6pm. We also open on Bank Holidays and have a range of working shift patterns within the week.

The main duties for this role are described in detail in the job description and person specification document, that is attached to this vacancy. Please ensure to read through to further your understanding of the role.

Working for our organisation

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
