An exciting full-time permanent Band 7 Clinical Scientist post has arisen to join the Clinical Biochemistry team at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants should have an honours degree in a relevant science, and MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent, registration with the Health Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist or be in the final year of Healthcare Sciences STP training scheme, with the aim to achieve HCPC registration within the next 12 months.
Our department supports both adult and Paediatric services across 6 hospitals and comprises laboratories on the Oxford Road Campus, Wythenshawe, Trafford and North Manchester sites. The laboratories are extensively equipped with Roche Cobas analysers for core chemistries and immunoassay, several HPLC systems and extensive mass spectrometry equipment and expertise. We have one of the largest POCT services in the UK, which continues to expand in order to improve patient pathways (supporting the establishment of virtual wards (Hospital at Home) and Community Diagnostic Centres.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Oxford Road Campus (ORC) but will also work with the POCT teams on the Wythenshawe, Trafford and North Manchester sites, either remotely or where required on site.
Key areas of responsibility will include providing support for our POCT team including leading on equipment selection, evaluation, testing, troubleshooting, and quality assurance oversight. They will also liaise with clinical teams regarding POCT and will sit on the POCT committee. In our main laboratories they will support the Quality Assurance Manager in improving and maintaining analytical quality across our network, to include quality assurance, UKAS accreditation activities, analytical quality improvement projects and provide IQC/EQA clinical oversight for a number of assays.
Following HCPC registration you will be involved in provision of the duty biochemist service, attendance at relevant MDTs will be encouraged.
The successful candidate will be involved in analytical method development to support our extensive specialist biochemistry services. There are opportunities for R&D with on-going plans for expansion and development of key services. We would also encourage participation in clinical quality improvement projects and clinical audit. We are committed to training and development with teaching and mentoring opportunities both within the directorate and via links with the University of Manchester.
