The Postholder has the delegated responsibility for overseeing the trust maternity preceptorship programme. They will work closely with the Recruitment and Retention lead and PBE Team. They will actively facilitate an environment within the maternity service to support the learning and development of the preceptee midwives, thus contributing to improved patient care. The preceptorship support midwife will act as a role model, providing supervision, coaching, and mentoring. You will identify learning needs and facilitate support structures, whilst encouraging individuals to take ownership for their own learning. The post holder will support the Retention and Recruitment midwife to develop, co-coordinate, evaluate and implement the preceptorship programme and learning packages with consideration to contributing curriculum development, validation, and review

The post holder will also participate in assessment and planning of midwifery care which will include the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in midwifery care for women/birthing persons and their families. They will practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies in order that a safe and quality service is provided. Taking overall responsibility for the coordination and safe effective management of the clinical team on a shift basis, taking overall responsibility for effective management of the team and the maintenance of high standards of quality care in the clinical area

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 6 midwife to join Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s maternity services. The successful postholder will have the opportunity to develop their skills in a variety of maternity areas including high risk and low risk intrapartum care, maternity triage and antenatal and postnatal inpatient services. At Stockport NHS Foundation Trust we pride ourselves on providing excellent quality care within a supportive, friendly and dynamic team. We currently provide intrapartum inpatient services within two environments: Our birth centre has three pool rooms and a further additional birthing room, all designed to provide a relaxing environment for birth. Our recently redecorated delivery suite promotes a safe yet serene environment and consists of one pool room and a further eight delivery rooms, with a specialist bereavement suite also available. We also have a twenty-eight bed mixed antenatal and postnatal ward that promotes a restful recovery post birth. The maternity triage department is co-located with our antenatal day unit and successfully promotes the use of the Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric Triage System to promote safe standards of care.  Wherever you work within our unit, we are a friendly, patient-focused team and cement the establishment of our Trust Values in all aspects of care: We Care, We Respect, We Listen.

Detailed Job description and Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate should be able to:

·         Actively support the development of an effective practice learning and development environment within the Maternity Service and across the Directorate.

·         Work along Band 5 midwife colleagues to provide direct support supervision and guidance in the clinical area and promoting current evidence-based practice.

·         Act as a role model at all times and provide midwifery expertise and specialist knowledge within the area of practice.

·         Support the professional and personal development of staff within the Maternity service to improve the quality of patient care.

·         Contribute to an environment in which individuals take ownership for their own learning and development.

·         Assist in the development and implementation of the preceptorship programme, supporting colleagues to achieve the skills and knowledge necessary to complete it.

·         Act as a preceptor to preceptees and undertake regular review meetings.

·         Work together with the trust preceptorship team to support the general preceptorship and act as a guide to preceptees undertaking their e-portfolio.

·         Support the learning experience of pre-registration student midwives acting as a practice assessor where appropriate.

·         Support an environment in which excellence clinical care will flourish.

  • Maintain a high clinical profile and facilitate application of theory to practice.
  •  Be responsible in prioritising, assessing, planning implementing and evaluating in all relevant aspects of midwifery care to an agreed and expected high standard
  • Ensure there is effective and sensitive communication between the women, babies and their families and with all the MDT
  • Supports the Ward Manager/Team Leader in monitoring the action of others to whom responsibility for patient has been delegated
  • Ensure that patient documentation is appropriate, accountable and defensible in accordance with Trust and NMC policies, disseminating all relevant changes in the patient’s condition to the MDT
  • Be competent in clinical skills to enable delivery of high quality midwifery care within the service
  • Assist  in the organisation and management of multi-professional care for women and families
  • Undertake, perform and assess enhanced skills within the clinical area, to improve the patient experience
  • Be competent in the correct use of all equipment used in the clinical setting in accordance with instructions, department procedures and NHSLA guidelines, reporting any faults as necessary
  • Ensure that Child Protection, Vulnerable Adult and Mental Health legislation is adhered to
  • Promote and collaborate in developing good working relationships with internal and external departments to ensure the patient journey is effective and efficient management.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
