Job overview

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is looking to expand its current team of Enhanced Pre-Hospital Care Consultants to support the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and Enhanced Pre-Hospital Care provisions operated through the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) charity.

Operating as a consultant level clinician, the role requires the provision of autonomous on scene critical care for traumatic and medical incidents and hospital transfers of patients of all ages. During all operational hours there is a Senior Medical Team HEMS consultant available for telephone peer support and discussion, as well as an incredible Critical Care Paramedic team, led by a Consultant HEMS Paramedic, with many having years of HEMS experience.

The ability to work effectively as part of a team is an essential part of the role as well as being able to work well under pressure. Appropriate training will be provided and all successful applicants will also undertake a period of supervised working as part of their induction.

These roles are currently based out of our Barton base in Greater Manchester but cover the whole of the North West of England. In addition, there is also a requirement to attend a minimum of 4 case review meetings and 3 training days per year, as well as partake in the two day NWAS mandatory training session, all of which are paid for.

Main duties of the job

Candidates should be already operating at a Consultant level and will need to be able to commit to a minimum of two operational shifts a month, including a mix of night and day shifts, as well as contributing to cover for public holidays including Christmas and New Year.

Currently we operate day shifts that are 12 hours from 8am to 8pm and that are predominantly aircraft based (daylight hours). These are seven days a week including bank holidays and public holidays.

As we start to expand our hours of operation with the ultimate goal of being a 24 hours a day service we have started to operate a night car from 6pm to 2am. This expansion is with the aim of operating these shifts seven days a week.

Applicants would need to be flexible with future developments, in fact we hope that you will help us shape them!

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.
We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
