ABOUT MCHFT

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides acute and community services to a population of approximately 320,000 people across Cheshire.
The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.
We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.
The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.
Our Trust values of respect, putting people and patients first and working together to continuously improve form the basis of everything that we do. The results in the 2023 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in many elements across all themes, making the Trust one of the top scoring acute/non specialist Trusts within Cheshire & Merseyside. As a Trust we have committed to a vision of  continuous improvement across the organisation as the way in which we work.

The Clinical Haematology Service at MCHFT

MCHFT provides both inpatient and outpatient management of a wide variety of benign and malignant haematological disorders as would be typical of a District General Hospital haematology practise.  There is a Level 2a Clinical Haematology inpatient, outpatient and day-case service at Leighton Hospital, with Leighton patients accessing Level 3 care at University Hospitals North Midlands (UHNM).

Haematology has no dedicated inpatient beds at Leighton Hospital and inpatients are managed in medical beds by MCHFT acute physicians with Consultant Haematologist input. Haematology do
however provide a service to the Medical and Surgical Directorates to give haematological assessments when required by regular ward rounds, with additional ad-hoc visits as required.  The haematology team are also responsible for haematology patients receiving out-patient care, including those attending the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit (MACCU). Clinics are delivered in Outpatients and the MACCU; chemotherapy is undertaken in the MACCU.

There are currently new and follow-up haematology clinics distributed amongst the Consultant Haematologists, ANP and CNS. The clinics are currently held in the MACCU, Main Outpatients Department or the Digital Suite at Leighton Hospital.

The Consultant Haematologists provide support to the anticoagulation service when required.

There is considerable liaison with local General Practitioners for haematological advice, via the electronic e-referral system and e-Advice and Guidance system. The post-holder would join the existing consultant’s rota to manage this.
