We are looking for a highly skilled, compassionate, experienced Clinical Psychologist to join us. This is an exciting opportunity to provide clinical leadership for our Admission and Avoidance service for people with a learning disability (LD) with or without autism.

This post offers the opportunity to provide highly specialised clinical psychology services to adults with learning disabilities with complex psychological needs, challenging behaviour, autism and high risk/forensic presentations. The post-holder will be instrumental in supporting the development of a psychologically minded workforce and will work within an integrated multi-professional health and social care team. The service is an innovative service and offers a hospital avoidance unit for people experiencing a period of crisis due to their learning disability needs. The postholder will be part of a wider psychology team who sit across our five learning disability community teams.

We offer clinical supervision and excellent opportunities for continuing professional development and involvement with service development, audit and research projects. You will be part of an expanding, energetic, innovative LD Care Hub team that values coproduction and working alongside people with lived experience and promotes trauma informed care.

The post holder will work within the Learning Disability Crisis Response Unit predominately on the Radcliffe site within the borough of Bury and will also work across the footprint of Pennine Care as the clinical lead for the newly established service. Our new service aims to provide a therapeutic model of care to people aged 16-25 years with a Learning Disability with or without Autism who are experiencing a period of crisis by the provision of a service to reduce hospital admissions and offer of a de-escalation programme.
The role of the Principal Psychologist postholder includes the responsibility for the promotion, management and implementation of a psychologically informed model of care. The postholder will provide support, clinical leadership and guidance within the multi-disciplinary teams around the delivery of a trauma informed service.
The postholder will spend an allocation of their time in providing support to the care hubs Consultant Clinical Psychologist in their role as the lead for practitioner psychologists working within the Learning Disabilities care hub.
The new service will be offered to people with a learning disability with or without autism across the geographical footprint of Greater Manchester.
The learning disabilities care hub consists of community learning disability teams spread across the five localities of Pennine Care (Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Stockport) primarily to adults aged 18+ years and with some provision to children and young people. The postholder will take an active role in working with the teams in service development and engagement by supporting:
Service improvements
Development and delivery of training
Conducting research, audit and evaluation.
Development of treatment pathways

The post holder will work to support the wider clinical activities of psychologists within the care hub and provide cover and support across the localities in the event of staff absence. The post holder will provide clinical supervision duties to both qualified and unqualified psychologists. The post holder will also play an active role in the promotion of psychology and representation of practitioner psychologists across the care hub and wider systems

Education / Qualifications

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology, (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.
  • Current registration as a clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.

  • Completion of further post qualification training within psychological therapies (e.g. DBT, CBT, CAT, CFT, MBT etc.).

Experience

  • Demonstrable post qualification experience of specialist assessment and treatment of adult clients and those with psychological difficulties in an inpatient setting.
  • Experience of working with people with a learning disability.
  • Demonstrable post qualification experience of working with complex mental health problems, including distressing psychosis, problems associated with complex relational and emotional needs, and severe depression, anxiety and trauma.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with people experiencing a suicidal crisis. working within inpatient adult multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of clinical leadership within a previous role
  • Demonstrable experience of providing clinical supervision to psychologists, psychological therapists or other core health professions.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing teaching/ training upon clinical interventions.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing demand for psychological services within a form of stepped-care framework (i.e. an approach based upon the provision of direct care, and supporting other professionals in their provision of direct psychosocial work.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of the national and regional legislation, guidance and policy directives in relation to the development and delivery of psychological therapies within inpatient services
  • Evidence of post qualification CPD as recommended and/or accredited by the BPS, or other professional body
  • Up to date knowledge of the needs of people with complex mental health problems, and of psychological approaches to recovery.
  • Awareness of the principles of a trauma informed care approach
  • Familiarity with computing technology, including keyboard skills, and use of word-processing, e-mail, and internet software.

  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies and approaches for adults with complex mental health problems.

  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non professional groups
  • Well developed, effective communication skills, both oral and in writing, enabling complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to be shared with service users, their families, carers and other professional colleagues within the NHS and other agencies.
  • Ability to prioritise work, operate a waiting list, meet short deadlines and an unpredictable work pattern that requires regular revision of plans.
  • Ability to sit in constrained position for service user assessment, formulation, individual and group therapy sessions and for computer work
  • Ability to work at a high level of professional autonomy and responsibility, in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment and also as a lone worker in circumstances where there may be exposure to verbal and sometimes physical aggression.
  • Able to sustain the intense concentration necessary for service user assessment and formulation, individual and group therapy sessions.
  • Ability to work and communicate highly sensitive, contentious information effectively in a highly emotive or hostile atmosphere, and to overcome barriers to acceptance/psychological resistance to potentially threatening information
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to staff and carers exposed to highly distressing situations
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
