Are you looking for a new challenge?  Are you passionate, innovative, and driven to achieve change through a quality improvement approach? If so, we would love you to come and join our speech and language therapy team at Fairfield General Hospital, Bury.

We are looking for an experienced SLT to lead on and coordinate management of adults with a broad range of complex acquired communication and swallowing difficulties across the acute medical and surgical wards, including taking a lead role in management of tracheostomy, videofluoroscopy and FEES. 

As a team we are committed to innovative practice, audit and research opportunities. We have good links with the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Research and Quality Improvement (QI) teams who are able to provide specialist support for personal and team growth in these areas. Leadership training and development is also promoted across the department.

The SLT team at Fairfield work in either acute medical wards, including critical care, or acute respiratory unit with a strong support network. There is also the opportunity to work alongside our stroke therapists at our Primary Stroke Centre. We have good links with SLTs across the Northern Care Alliance providing wide access to expertise knowledge and skill within our profession.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and be based within the SLT team at Fairfield General Hospital.

The post holder will work as part of the MDT across the acute medical and surgical wards.

The role will encompass the following opportunities;

Contribution to research and innovative treatment for patients with communication and swallowing.

Contribution to quality improvement projects and service development to ensure we deliver a high quality, safe, effective service for our patients. 

CPD including leadership development

You will be supported to lead the acute FEES service as well as contributing to regular Videofluoroscopy clinics and providing care to acute care patients with tracheostomy.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy (or recognised equivalent)
  • Post-basic qualification/ specialist competencies in dysphagia (RCSLT Level C)
  • Evidence of successful completion of relevant short courses
  • Clinical Educator training
Desirable criteria
  • Training/experience of tracheostomy management
  • Completion/partial completion of FEES competencies
  • Completion/partial completion of videofluoroscopy competencies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience (ideally minimum 24 months) as a band 6 SLT working with an adult acute caseload and management of dysphagia
  • Extensive experience managing complex dysphagia and communication disorders including use of AAC and assistive technology.
  • Experience delivering training and supervising others
  • Service development experience and experience leading a small project
  • Experience in leading a small team.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to speak another language relevant to the population of Greater Manchester/ Experience working with interpreters
  • Participation in research
  • Membership of relevant CENs/RCSLT hubs
  • Audit experience
  • Leadership training

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Basic understanding of computers and their applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to present information in a clear and logical manner
  • Proven organisational skills including time management, effective delegation and prioritisation and the ability to complete a task.
  • Ability to work with and motivate others within a team
  • To comprehend and work within the Trusts policies of data protection, confidentiality, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the differing needs of patients.
  • Physically fit and able to comply with the Trusts moving and handling guidelines subject to reasonable adjustments under the terms of the Equality Act 2010.
  • Ability to be flexible to meet the needs of the service.
  • Able to travel between sites.
