This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced cardiac nurse to develop their career and leadership skills to deliver the highest quality care to patients admitted to the Acute Cardiac Ward.

The post holder will work on Ward 2 which is an 18 bedded inpatient unit caring for patients with a wide variety of cardiac conditions such as: Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, Endocarditis and Pericardial Effusions. Interventions are carried out on our Silver Heart Unit (Ward 1) based next door so pre and post care of patients undergoing interventional procedures will be incorporated into the role. 

As a Sister/Charge Nurse you will provide daily clinical and managerial leadership to staff in the delivery of evidence based practice. You will actively support the Ward and Managers in the effective running of the department including in their absence. You will play a key role in the education, supervision and assessment of all learners.

The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the 24/7 rota and will be expected to cover Long Days, Nights, Weekends and Bank Holidays as required.

Using your clinical experience and skills you will be responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care for patients on the ward. You will undertake nursing interventions consistent with evidence-based practice, transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet patients’ needs. 

On the Ward you will be the Nurse-in-Charge, where you will be responsible for the coordination of the running of the shift.

You will participate in the 24/7 rota and be prepared to work flexible shifts including weekends, nights and bank holidays.

You will conduct yourself professionally within the standards framework provided by the NMC Codes of Professional Conduct.

You will have extensive knowledge and experience in cardiology and an enthusiasm for your own and others learning and development, playing a key role leading in the education, development, supervision and assessment of all learners and unregistered staff. 

You will  be an ALS provider or have a willingness to complete ALS certification and will provide leadership in the management of emergency situations.

Communications and Relationships

·         You will display excellent communication skills to deliver complex and sensitive information, lifestyle and post procedure care to service users.

·         Challenge behaviours and practices consistently and at the time of observation, leading this in a respectful and professional manner.

 

Analytical and Judgmental Skills

·         To undertake data collection effectively using the agreed system.

·         To utilise the appropriate judgemental skills when assessing and advising patients and relatives in crisis situations.

·         Complete audits and checklists as required.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

·         To be responsible for the implementation and for the ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of the planned care and ensure that accurate and meaningful nursing records are maintained.

·         To be responsible for daily administrative requirements that arise during a shift.

 

Policy and Service Development

·         You will contrubute to the development of services within the Integrated Cardiology Unit through quality improvement stratergies.

·         You will complete audits and utilise clinical audit research, supervision, practice and teaching as well as monitoring and improving standards of care.

·         You will contribute to the development and completion of nursing competencies.

·         You will contribute to the ongoing update of nursing care plans, patient information and evidence based policy.

 

Financial Responsibility

·         To ensure optimum, efficient and effective use of human and departmental resources.

·         To report breakdowns or malfunctions of equipment immediately and complete the relevant documents to minimise disruption to the service.

·         To monitor, control, order and store supplies/material resources according to the requirements and specifications of the clinical environment, considering any changes in the needs of the department.

·         To identify any problems with the use or availability of resources and make recommendations for corrective actions which are consistent with organisational policies and department objectives.

·         To ensure patient’s valuables and belongings are managed according to Trust policy.

·         To mainatin appropriate, accurate and up to date records of resource use.

·         To assist in the control and use of medications and procedure equipment by monitoring and maintaining stock levels.

 

Planning and Organisational Skills

·         To prioritise care requirements for identified patients.

·         To assist in the management and organisation of workload, adjusting plans/rotas to cover emergencies.

·         To organise and monitor the work and performance of junior colleagues providing constructive feedback, advice and ongoing support.

·         To monitor progress of work recognising changing priorities and implement corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.

 

Leadership and Management

·         Support the Ward Manager with nursing rotas, allocation, supervision and coordination of clinically based teams.

·         To lead the ward shift in the coordination of the patient list, allocation, breaks, work load and resources.

·         To confidently lead any clinical emergencies that may arrise, escalting issues timely and appropriately and feeding back to the team.

·         To lead a nursing team providing timely appraisals and welcome back heath reviews, ensuring that development plans are consistant with their team objectives and action plans are followed through.

·         To communicate clearly with your nursing team members, providing them with the opportunities to contribute to the planning and organisation of work.

·         To identify, report and address poor performance issues.

·         To diffuse challenging behaviour, ensuring that the situation is managed in a sensitive way.

·         To contribute to the recruitment and selection process.

·         To actively contribute to the identification of future workforce planning/training/competency requirements.
