Job overview

To ensure full implementation of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA), including the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLs), through the provision of expert practice, leadership and consultancy to PCFT frontline staff and strategic support to nursing directorate. Leading and supporting specific research, service developments and educational opportunities (including the design and delivery of training programmes) developing and ensuring relevant policies and practices are MCA compliant.

Main duties of the job

• To support the Head of Safeguarding as strategic lead for Mental Capacity Act.
• To provide leadership in relation to the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act in the health economies and at the interface with Social Care.
• To provide Mental Capacity Act expertise, knowledge, skills, training and advice to enable a safe, effective and high quality service that meets existing and new policies, practices and procedures.
• To provide leadership in the development of practices that demonstrate the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act and more specifically in relation to the specialist skills required to support people with communication difficulties and/or who lack capacity

  • Line management responsibilities for future members of MCA/safeguarding team and provide MCA supervision.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Health or Social Care Practitioner
  • Relevant Masters Degree or equivalent
  • Substantial experience on the use of MCA in practice
  • Evidence of training in MCA/DoLs
Desirable criteria
  • Best Interest Assessor
  • Leadership and Management Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working within Safeguarding Specialist Role
  • Experience of working with vulnerable adults or children
  • Experience of contributing to quality assurance
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in delivering MCA/DoLs training
  • Experience of research, audit and evaluation

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant specialist knowledge and understanding of MCA/DoLs
  • In-depth knowledge of local safeguarding policies
  • Clear understanding of risk management
  • Understanding of the multi-agency approach
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of NHS and Social Care Organisations
