The post holder will have ongoing operational management responsibility for all age mental health liaison services across the care hub and will ensure the provision of high quality clinical services supporting individuals presenting with mental health conditions within the acute trust and other non-mental health settings.

The post holder will ensure the coordination and development of defined teams implementing and maintaining services within a defined resource and work collaboratively with external partners to ensure that mental and physical health needs are supported with parity and to ensure the service operates in a safe, effective and efficient way as part of the wider health and social care system.

The hospital mental health liaison service offers a comprehensive range of mental health expertise  within one multi-disciplinary team so that all patients with a suspected or actual mental health problem within the general hospital can be assessed, treated, signposted or referred appropriately regardless of age, presenting complaint, time of presentation or severity of condition. The service puts an emphasis on diversion and discharge from A and E and the facilitation of early but effective discharge from the acute hospital site. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and post will involve occasional shift work to supervise staff. Mental health liaison is delivered by PCFT with the all age team located next to and within the Acute Hospital setting.

  • To ensure the service is shaped through lived and living experience collaboration and engagement.
  • Contribute to the Bronze Senior Manager on Call rota for Mental Health

The Tameside  All Age,  24/7, Liaison Mental Health Team is a small and dedicated multi-disciplinary team working closely with our acute colleagues in the local acute trust and our wider community partners. 

The team is at the acute and crisis end of mental health service delivery and offers the right candidate a highly rewarding role in NHS frontline provision. No two days are the same and the role will offer a new challenges on a regular basis with an ability to innovate and be flexible in our delivery of services being a key attribute of our service. 

The team is keen to develop and is open to new ways of working and looking for a service manager who can lead this within a borough and MH Trust open to new ways of thinking and practicing with the person in need at the centre.

The team is supportive of each other and the wider system and is actively engaging with new developments and currently working to benchmark against PLAN with a view of developing the service further. 

The team are actively engaged in clinical research projects but internal and external.

The team are passionate around continuous improvement through collaboration with system partners our work force and lived and living experience users.

Management and leadership

 

  • To take a lead in the effective recruitment and retention of staff within the mental health liaison service
  • Provide effective and efficient senior operational management to mental health liaison teams within the division
  • Ensure that a professional service and image is maintained at all times, thereby acting as a role model
  • Delegate, organise and prioritise autonomously to ensure the safe delivery of services, making judgements and leading in complex situations eg unexpected service
  • Establish systems and process for effective communication within the area of responsibility across agencies and in collaboration with lead
  • Provide leadership coaching and development support to mental health liaison clinical leads
  • Actively monitor staff performance, ensure IPDRs are in place for all staff addressing issues in a timely and appropriate manner by encouraging and supporting professional and personal growth and facilitating
  • Ensure appropriate supervision and staff support systems are in place across the mental health liaison service
  • Effectively manage productivity by consistently implementing trust policies regarding absence management and annual leave
  • Investigate and action complaints and clinical incidents, sharing learning from these across the service and implementing robust action plans where required in line with Trust policy
  • To work with staff to ensure policies, professional standards and requirements are implemented and understood within the service
  • To provide specialist advice, guidance or consultation to team members and other professionals contributing to clinical care

 

  • Chair and facilitate team and service meetings
  • Represent mental health liaison services within locality meetings as required

 

Communication and Relationships

 

  • To develop and maintain productive relationships with all staff within the service area, maximising the opportunity for staff
  • To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner and manage difficult situations where individuals may present in a distressed or volatile
  • To promote a culture that actively embraces, demonstrates and supports diversity and collaboration with others, including patients and carers and moves beyond the traditional boundaries of practice
  • To adopt and embed a multidisciplinary approach to care delivery within the service
  • Promote and maintain partnerships and interface with other professionals across organisational boundaries. Act as a highly specialist source of information and support for other professionals and agencies across the health and social care context.
  • Ensure services work in collaboration with other mental health teams and inpatient wards to provide safe transition into services when required
  • To ensure user, carer and professionals views are accessed routinely to support service review and development and patient and carer experience is core to all clinical and service
  • Deliver information to the services, teams and other agencies using a variety of means

 

Financial

 

  • Monitor and manage budgets for the service area with due regard to the Standing Financial Instructions of the Trust, reporting pressures at an early stage to the senior team
  • Work with mental health liaison clinical leads to manage budget pressures and ensure effective use of
  • To be an authorised signatory for service area

 

Information Resources

 

  • Maintain accurate records and information for the purposes of statistical returns
  • Ensure systems are in place to collect and report service activity and
  • Prepare and provide highlight reports for the trust and commissioners and ensure staff are providing the necessary information required to meet KPIs and service level

 

Research and Development

 

  • Develop and co-ordinate relevant training programmes to ensure there is appropriate learning across the service
  • Improve and positively develop clinical practice within the mental health liaison service using expert clinical knowledge and national guidance for liaison
  • Demonstrate leadership, initiative and creativity inspiring others to be to be positive in their contribution to continuous improvement
  • To undertake the measurement and review of own work and current practices through the application of evidence based best practice projects, reflective practice, clinical supervision, peer review, audit, research and outcome measures, applying them in practice
