Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of individuals experiencing acute mental health crisis?  If so, we invite you to join our team at Shrewsbury Ward, an acute male psychiatric ward for adults aged 18 to 65.   We are seeking a dedicated Occupational Therapist to join our team and contribute to the well-being and recovery of our service users.  Shrewsbury Ward is a supportive and safe environment dedicated to promoting the recovery and social inclusion of individuals facing acute mental health crisis. 

The  Occupational Therapist will support patient participation needed to improve their function and occupational performance.  This will included delivery of a structured, purposeful, and comprehensive occupational therapy program as well as individualised care plan.  The aim is to enhance patients' occupational performance, social functioning, and well-being.

 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The appointed Occupational Therapist will be working on Shrewsbury Ward: Oxleas House.  Providing assessment and intervention based activities to the patients on the ward within a group setting or individualised. 

The current OT team within Oxleas House includes a Band 7 Occupational Therapist, who will be available to provide informal support as well as formal supervision, including preceptorship support.  There is also support from Band 6  Occupational therapist ,Occupational Therapy support workers and peer support staff who work across the site , and who meet regularly for service development and CPD.

The role of the OT within the team is to support service user’s to be able to develop the performance skills needed to be able to engage in the daily meaningful activities they need and want to do which they may have stopped doing whilst unwell.  

The appointed Occupational Therapist would be expected to complete initial occupational and functional assessments, care planning, outcome measurements, reviews and discharge planning.

Line management, professional and clinical Occupational Therapy supervision is delivered in line with guidance from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. The post holder will be encouraged to contribute to service development and innovative projects within the directorate and will be supported to do so

  • To manage a clinical caseload
  • To work as a member of the MDT

  • To provide OT specific assessment & interventions via groups & individual work related to: self-care, work and leisure

Clinical

  • To manage a caseload of service users with mental health needs
  • To work with service users to identify OT goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan, OT assessment tools & treatment techniques.
  • To work with service users in a variety of settings in order to provide the most effective assessment & interventions.
  • To plan & implement service user led individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • To ensure service users health, social, cultural and spiritual needs are considered at all times.
  • To assess for and provide equipment to enhance independence in daily living skills for service users with a physical disability in addition to their mental health needs.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress and identify outcomes.
  • To plan and deliver services within the Care Programme Approach framework.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on life skills to maximise functional ability.
  • To assess the occupational needs of service users and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment interventions.
  • To identify appropriate & inappropriate referrals and prioritise workload.
  • To manage effective discharge ensuring service user and all relevant agencies are given relevant information.
  • To contribute to and carry out risk assessment & risk management plans.
  • To work as part of the MDT and attend all relevant clinical meetings

Communication

  • To communicate complex and sensitive information that is appropriate with service users and carers, team members, OT colleagues and other agencies.
  • To demonstrate effective communication skills with those who have difficulty with communication for any reason.
  • To communicate effectively as required within job role using appropriate methods of communication.
  • To promote an awareness of the OT role within the team, negotiating priorities where appropriate

Documentation

  • To ensure that up to date electronic and written records are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.

Professional Ethics

  • To comply with the RCOT Code of Ethics and Professional conduct & HCPC standards for registration
  • To adhere to Trust policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • To adhere to any other relevant local and national policies and guidelines
  • To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of service users and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
  • To demonstrate the ability to reflect on ethical issues.

  • To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal guided by KSF

Training staff and students

  • To contribute to the induction, training, and education of students [both OT & other professions] and other staff in clinical area

Service development and delivery

  • To contribute to service & policy review and implementation
  • To participate in the operational planning, implementation, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical care pathways and protocols within own clinical area
  • To raise awareness of the OT service within own clinical area
  • To participate in the development of the OT service within own clinical area

Professional Development

  • To apply acquired skills and knowledge in order to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Band 5 OT
  • To attend all relevant mandatory training as directed by the Trust.
  • To contribute to CPD through participation in internal and external training and other development opportunities
  • To maintain and update a CPD portfolio.

Clinical governance and quality standards

  • To contribute to the team’s clinical governance and quality agenda
  • To ensure practice is evidence based.
  • To demonstrate understanding and application of national guidelines and legislation relating to mental health & social care provision
