Job overview

This is a full time 10 PA locum post for 1 year FT.

The Department of Urology at The Hillingdon Hospital is split between two sites, Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital.

The post-holder will undertake a combination of outpatient sessions and operating lists across the two sites and be expected to take an active role in research and development.

The post holder will report to the clinical lead and is accountable to the clinical director and ultimately the medical director. The remit of the post holder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for urology patients.  In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will include Theatre sessions, outpatient clinics to include routine, urgent and 2 week wait referrals, MDT meetings, SPA and clinical admin. The post is expected to develop during the appointment and the appointee will be actively involved in this development process. The job plan will then be reviewed annually in accordance with the Trust policy on Consultant Job Planning.

The post will be a substantive appointment to join the existing team of three substantive consultant colleagues and one associate specialist.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnostic, treatment and care to patients requiring urology services, as outlined in the proposed programme
  • To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the Somerset Urology Service
  • Except in emergencies, or where otherwise agreed with your manager, to be responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in the Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time
  • Responsibility for the associated duties set out in of the Terms and Conditions
  • The purpose of including agreed personal objectives in the Job Plan is to set out in clear and transparent terms what you and your clinical manager have agreed should reasonably be achieved in the year in question. These objectives are not contractually binding in themselves, but you have a duty to make all reasonable efforts to achieve them
  • To provide, with Consultant colleagues (as appropriate), a service in the specialty to the hospitals so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness
  • Locums are not normally employed to cover the absence of Consultants who are away on leave. The number of Consultants who are away on leave at any one time will be agreed in line with the Trust specialty policy. During the absence of colleagues on leave, Consultants are expected to provide agreed levels of cover
  • You will be required to travel between sites ie THH and MVH, including when on-call
  • Where emergency work takes place at regular and predictable times, your clinical manager will seek to schedule it as part of the Programmed Activities in your Job Plan schedule. You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota to respond to less predictable emergencies
  • The Trust will provide secretarial support and an adequately equipped office, including IT facilities
  • To provide a general Urology service, in collaboration with other multidisciplinary medical, nursing, technical staff and other staff
  • Teaching of Junior Staff Medical Students, APH and other professionals
  • To provide supervision and training to Junior Hospital Doctors
  • To participate in clinical audit, evidence–based practice and Clinical Governance within the Department
  • To participate actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent
  • Certificate in completing specialization in urology
  • GMC registration with licensee practice
  • Wide experience in Urology
  • Ability to perform TP prostate Bx independently under LA
  • Experience in ureteroscopy including primary ureteroscopy and LASER of stones.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within Urology.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to work with multi-Disciplinary teams.
  • Basic IT skills, i.e. able to handle e-mails and do presentations
  • Clinical Governance: demonstrate awareness of good decision making. Awareness of own limitations. Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors Audit: experience of audit
