Neonatal and Transitional Care Unit

We are seeking highly motivated Registered children nurses or nurses with Neonatal or Paediatric experience to complement our neonatal team.  This post offers the opportunity to work in a level 2 Neonatal Unit and Transitional care ward based in the postnatal ward.   

As part of the team, you will assess, plan, evaluate and implement care for a group of babies in the high dependency, special or transitional care.  You will also be responsible for maintaining standards on the unit alongside with your other nursing colleagues in the team and supporting neonatal support workers and student nurses.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder is required to take responsibility as the care provider for a determined group of patient without direct supervision.
  • The post holder is required to supervise and teach junior staff and pre and post registration student whilst maintaining a safe working environment.
  • The post holder is required to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care base on the Trust’s mission statement, core objectives and Nursing, Midwifery & Healthcare Assistant Strategy.
  • The post holder is required to work within the codes of practice, professional guidelines and policies.

Working for our organisation

Our Neonatal Unit has the capacity of 3 intensive care, 5 high dependency and 12 special care cots.  We have expertise to provide high quality care to babies with Intensive care, high dependency and special care.  We are passionate about family integrate and developmental care.

Staff from the Neonatal Unit also rotates to work in the 6 bedded Transitional Care based on the postnatal ward.  This experience will further enhance your experience in nursing low risk special care babies who requires minimal medical intervention.  Nurses working in the TCU will gain experience in managing a 6 bedded ward with the support of a neonatal support worker.

Covid-19 Vaccination is a condition of employment for this role, unless an exemption applies, the successful applicant may have contact with vulnerable service users and we therefore seek proof of being fully vaccinated at recruitment stage.

Main tasks and responsibilities
1. Clinical Practice

 To work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to develop individual programmes that provides measurable outcomes of patient care.

 To provide high quality holistic care to a defined group of patients/ clients on the ward prioritising workload according to the changing clinical need through throughout the shift. The group of babies will include special and high dependency care babies who require care in:
 oxygen therapy
 intravenous therapy including TPN and / or blood transfusion
 gastric / jejunal or gastrostomy feeding
 maintaining infant’s temperature ie nursing babies in incubator /hot cot
 phototherapy
 Ph studies
 specific observation for eg. babies with drug withdrawal/babies of diabetic mother.
 Optiflow (high flow oxygen) and NCPAP babies after receiving training and achieving competency.

 To promote family integrated care and ensure health promotion as an integral part of nursing care

 To provide sensitive support to all parents especially the parents of dying babies and babies with anomalies

  • First level nursing qualification with current NMC registration
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Evidence of successful clinical placement during training or ward experience
  • Some experience in neonatal nursing and interest in neonatal specialty
