Job overview

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care to patients attending the Accident & Emergency department by assisting the nursing and medical staff in performing clinical investigations set out in this job description. The post holder will work in all acute areas of the department, responding to the needs of the department. Reporting to the Shift leader, the Emergency Department Technician will be allocated tasks by the area coordinator.

Main duties of the job

Use effective communication skills to interact with colleagues, patients and visitors entering the department promoting the core values of the trust.

Be aware of and utilise various tools for communicating with patients to alleviate anxiety and to overcome language barriers.

To gain appropriate consent from patients when carrying out procedures within role.

To assist nursing and medical staff with the provision of health promotion, such as advice following procedures on discharge.

Utilise Customer Care and Information Technology (IT) training to facilitate effective communication with patients and members of the multi-disciplinary team

Clinical Duties

Carry out routine observations; blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate on patients attending the Accident & Emergency department, documenting all patient observations and PAR scores in accordance with department protocols.

Carry out manual & machine analysis of urine samples, gaining consent for urinary HCG readings as required.

Perform Cannulation & Venepuncture on patients, as per Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) protocol as directed by the Registered Nurse or Medical staff.

Carry out treatments such as primary wound closure by Steri-Strip, skin-adhesive and application of Plaster of Paris splints in accordance with ANTT protocol.
