Tobacco Dependence Advisor

Summary of the Role:

Due to an increase in funding , an exciting opportunity  has arisen to join an expanding , dynamic stop smoking team. We are looking for two Tobacco Dependence Advisors . The post holders will contribute to supporting people within the borough, who want to stop smoking or using tobacco, contributing to the reduction of smoking rates thus improve the health of the local population, reduce smoking related ill health, disability and preventable death and reduce health inequalities.       

The postholders will provide evidenced based, specialist behavioural support and advice to smokers who want to quit. The postholder will be expected to deliver support through established community groups, one to one and telephone interventions. The postholder will be expected to deliver within locally defined areas covering a number of clinics in a range of settings.

The post holder will:

· To provide smoking cessation advice and support through established groups, one to one and telephone interventions in local community settings. 

· To provide smoking cessation interventions in line with the evidence base and to agreed National standards

· Utilise motivational techniques, assess client’s motivation to quit smoking and maintain relationships with the client group to support smoking cessation 

· Develop an action plan with the client and discuss the use of appropriate pharmacological support suitable to them.

· Extensive relevant knowledge of evidence-based information on smoking cessation approaches and methods

· Attend bespoke training events as required for career and continuous professional development. 

 · Extensive knowledge of health-related behaviour change evidence

The Addictions Directorate with CNWL Foundation Trust is a large, well-established provider which offers a wide range of specialist NHS drug and alcohol treatment interventions to the diverse and multicultural populations in Central and North West London. Our Drug and Alcohol services include community services, and the National Gambling Service and a Club Drug Clinic. In addition, we provide smoking cessation services in Hillingdon and Camden & Islington.

We are linked with Imperial College, University of London, University College London and numerous other local universities and are committed to evaluating our services and developing new and innovative approaches.

Hillingdon Stop Smoking Service is committed to providing accessible, evidenced based services that treat tobacco dependence, effectively helping smokers to stop smoking, reduce smoking health harms and inequality and ensure residents stay healthy, giving children the best start in life.

· Responsible for continuous learning knowledge of smoking cessation using the NCSCT online training packages

· Assess client’s motivation to quit to determine best course of action in their quit attempt

· Review personal objectives to ensure that they are effectively met in accordance with service work-plan

· Participate in regular reviews of service provision including venues, frequency and timing to ensure the needs of the client’s needs are met

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • • A good level of general education to include O Level or GCSE standard for English and Math’s or equivalent.
  • • Completed the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) or level 2 Smoking Cessation training.

  • • Additional modules of smoking cessation training via NCSCT for specialist priority groups

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Paid/unpaid relevant to job

  • • Experienced in providing a range of evidenced based behavioral change interventions
  • • Experience of and knowledge of Nicotine Replacement Therapy.
  • • Experience of providing Motivational Enhancement Therapy
  • • Experience of promoting health & wellbeing sessions.

  • • Experience of working in addictions services and working with client group.
  • • Experience of audit and service user satisfaction feedback and analysis.
  • • Experience and an understanding of the role of service users and promoting the ‘experts by experience ‘model of service provision.
