  • An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, driven and committed mental health nurse or AHP with a passion for parity of esteem and building bridges between physical and mental health to join GESH as their Associate Director of Mental Health.
  • St George’s Hospital have successfully established a mental health team in the emergency department to support the needs of those experiencing acute mental health crisis.
  • We are looking to grow and expand this model across GESH and are looking for an exceptional candidate who can support us to do so.
  • You will provide strategic and operational leadership in the care of adults and children with mental health needs across GESH.
  • The Associate Director of Mental Health will be professionally accountable to the Group Chief Nurse and will be responsible to the Group Director for Quality. 
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a Trust Mental Health Strategy that supports the delivery of the five year forward view for mental health and any strategic objectives as agreed by the internal mental health group or joint Mental Health Board.
  • This will include the design and implementation of initiatives to enhance the quality of care, experience and safety for people attending the Trust with mental health needs; in line with best practice.

  • Leadership & Management Design and lead delivery of significant transformational change regarding how we manage mental health in partnership with physical health, to meet Trust strategic and operational objectives across the organisation leading to measurable improvement in efficiency, safety and quality of care for patients. 
  • Design and lead the development of care pathways, guidelines and protocols for people with mental health needs.
  • Act as the principal advisor to the Group Director of Safeguarding, Group Director of quality and Group Chief Nurse on matters related to mental health.
  • To design provide/develop training for staff to understand the use of the Mental Health Act, clinical practice, risk management of the patient population. 
  • To review and agree a set of Quality performance Indicators to measure the improvement in care and reporting through the trust governance process.
  • Work collaboratively with key partners and stakeholders in the design and implementation of pathway improvements for mental health patients.
  • Ensure the Trust meets relevant legislative, contractual, and regulatory obligations in relation to the Mental Health agenda; this includes ensuring the Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards are met and maintaining an evidence/ assurance portfolio.

Main Duties/Key Results Areas:

Design and lead the development of care pathways, guidelines and protocols for people with mental health needs. Act as the principal advisor to the Group Director of Safeguarding, Group Director of quality and Group Chief Nurse on matters related to mental health.

 

-To design provide/develop training for staff to understand the use of the Mental Health Act, clinical practice, risk management of the patient population. To review and agree a set of Quality performance Indicators to measure the improvement in care and reporting through the trust governance process. Work collaboratively with key partners and stakeholders in the design and implementation of pathway improvements for mental health patients.

 

- Ensure the Trust meets relevant legislative, contractual, and regulatory obligations in relation to the Mental Health agenda; this includes ensuring the Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards are met and maintaining an evidence/ assurance portfolio.

 

- Provide regular reports to key committees setting out key information, support and escalation if required to the quality committee and other relevant executive meetings across the group. Develop key relationships and networks with multi agency partners and commissioners to improve services and improve standards of care for patients and their carers.

 

-Provide expert advice related to care of patients with mental health needs. Act as a resource and clinical opinion to colleagues, patients and carers on all issues relating to mental health.

 

- Act autonomously to provide expert clinical input, which will enhance the care and treatment plans for patients; ensuring that mental health and physical health are considered together.

 

-Ensure that accurate written and verbal information is relayed to staff; ensuring adequate facilities are in place to maintain safety in the environment to ensure the effective management of patients. Working with clinical teams, develop, support and implement a comprehensive, risk assessed care plan for clinical staff that ensures high quality patient care is delivered to patients with mental health need.

 

-Working with the executive team, Group directors and Chief Nurse, Heads of Nursing and matrons and Unit managers ensure effective use of the enhanced care risk assessments to ensure optimal deployment of Nursing, Midwifery, and Care and security staff. Develop a mental health dashboard which will include relevant KPIs for the monitoring of services and meet CQC standards. Lead, coordinate and when required, chair meetings for the implementation of key quality improvement projects / public awareness campaigns, agreed through the Mental Health Group and Board, in line with best practice.

 

- Work alongside multi professional teams in practice to ensure clinical teams are developed and feel confident in the care of patient with mental health needs.

 

- Participate in workforce redesign and modernisation for the nursing workforce, working in close partnership with key stakeholders.
