Job overview

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Service Line, on Ward 3,  an acute psychiatric ward at Springfield Hospital in Tooting. This post has become available because of the retirement of the current postholder.

We provide a full range of local mental health services to the Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth London boroughs, as well as specialist forensic mental health services, including high secure services, at Springfield Hospital.

We are a dynamic, financially stable mental health trust which has consistently been rated ‘good’ by the CQC both overall and specifically for our acute & urgent care services. We are several years into a Trust Wide quality improvement programme involving all clinicians, which is already delivering results. We have invested in further improvements to our acute and urgent care services, including one of the UK’s first mental health A&Es (now evolving into a mobile service), as well as Recovery Cafes and a Psychiatric Decision Unit.

Main duties of the job

Ward 3 is a mixed ward with 18 beds, and 2 “surge beds” used at time of high demand. The ward has a full multidisciplinary team including consultant, two core trainee doctors (one a core psychiatry trainee and the other a GPVTS trainee), a higher trainee in psychiatry , psychologist (0.5 wte), OT, specialist nurses, activity workers, healthcare assistants, ward clerk and ward manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Medical leadership, working in the multi-disciplinary team and working closely with, and providing cross-cover to other Consultant Psychiatrists and occasionally their Associate Clinical Director within their borough or service line.
  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day clinical care, risk assessment, risk management, initiation of medication, and the recovery focused care delivered by the Team
  • Availability within normal working hours 5 days a week for urgent review and management including formal Mental Health Act assessments.
  • Providing cross-cover for consultant colleagues where necessary (Ward 3 and Jupiter Ward consultant colleagues are paired for leave, but occasionally there may be other requirements for cover)
  • Management of complex cases
  • Allocation of resources, in collaboration with the team manager, to service users and carers.
  • Ensuring the delivery of effective, efficient, and safe, recovery focused mental health care.
  • Multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working with social care, statutory and voluntary and third sector partners.

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT.
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act
  • Approved Clinician (AC)
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT
  • Qualifications in change management and service development skills

KNOWLEDGE: & EXPERIENCE: Critical Expertise in Specialty

Essential criteria
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification

AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT:

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer’s groups, and local charities.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS:

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree in research
  • Completion of a research project and evidence of its dissemination
  • Publication in a peer reviewed journal

TEACHING:

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching Qualification
