Job overview

The Trust is seeking a locum consultant psychiatrist for the Adult In-patient Eating Disorders Ward, Avalon Ward, Springfield University Hospital. This is an established post. The vacancy has arisen as a result of the current postholder re-locating.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this well-established in-patient eating disorders unit, with well- functioning MDT and good national and international reputation.

 

Adult Eating Disorders Service:

The Adult Eating Disorder services comprise of the following: inpatient unit – Avalon ward, outpatient service and day unit.  All are located in a new, state of the art Trinity building.

The Trust operates as part of the South London Partnership (SLP) - a collaboration between the 3 trusts providing Mental health services for the 12 Boroughs of South London (South London and Maudsley [SLaM], OXLEAS and this Trust, South West London & St. George’s MH Trust). The SLP has an excellent reputation locally and nationally in context of innovation and good quality, patient centred care for population of South London.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointed consultant will provide overall clinical responsibility for the inpatient assessment, care and treatment of adults on Avalon ward. As such, this post holder will need to be able to support effective team functioning and will also be required to work with a part-time Consultant colleague and the team and directorate in service development initiatives. The aim of this post is to ensure the team delivers a high quality and innovative service, to develop new treatment ideas in keeping with current evidence, to continually evaluate the treatment and to work nationally towards improvement of services for patients with eating disorders.  The appointed Consultant will have ample opportunities to engage in work and initiatives within South London Provider Collaborative and in training opportunities, as well as in teaching of students and trainees.

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent
  • GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • Talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT
  • Management and service development skills

KNOWLEDGE: & EXPERIENCE: Critical Expertise in Specialty

Essential criteria
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process
  • Risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff

AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer’s groups, and local charities.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners

  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies
