The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is one of the world’s leading cancer research centres. The Trust works in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research to produce high quality basic research, translational studies and clinical trials with the aim of developing better treatments for the benefit of cancer patients worldwide.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 4 Assistant Practitioner, within the haematology research department to work across our Sutton and Chelsea branches on a 12-month fixed term basis.

The Assistant Practitioner is an essential valued member of the unit team appointed to support Registered Nurses (RN) in the delivery of patient care. The role involves contact on a physical and psychological level with patients and their families. The post holder will undertake a range of activities under the supervision of a registered nurse, having been assessed and deemed competent in the activities required.

As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will contribute to the efficient service provision by providing clerical, clinical and sample processing support and will take a lead on the handling and storage of tissue samples and survival follow up of long-term clinical trials.

The post holder will carry out assigned duties under direct and indirect supervision of senior nursing staff, assisting in the provision of routine clinical and research care for research participants.

The successful applicant will be required to work as a self directed practitioner and have the skills to motivate others. They should also have a flexible approach to their duties and the ability to work both as part of the team as well as independently. In addition, you will have excellent communication, administrative and IT skills and be supportive and open to new initiatives. Continuous professional development is highly valued and supported. 

The main focus of the post is to support the research team in all aspects of the trials/studies on a day to day basis, with supporting the processing, storage and shipment of clinical trial-related samples. 
It is expected that the successful candidate will have venepuncture skills and have experience of working in a hospital environment.

  • Maintain compassion, empathy, dignity, comfort, and sensitivity of patients and their relatives at all times
  • Monitor and record patients’ vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report any abnormal results to registered nursing staff.

  • Perform venous blood sampling
