Locum Consultant - Late Cancer Treatment Effects Lead

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Job overview

Late effects are an important cause of long-term mortality but are sub-optimally researched and managed. In the modern treatment era, there is also rapidly emerging a new ‘wave’ of cancer patients treated with novel immunotherapies and targeted therapies achieving high rates of durable response to treatment where little is known about long-term treatment-related late effects. RM, as one of the largest cancer treatment centres in UK, is in a unique position to establish large cohorts of patients with long follow-up. For example, a large existing cohort of women treated for lymphoma at RM/ICR influenced national high risk breast cancer screening. Building on this expertise, the BRC will expand and update cohorts and link with national datasets to explore risks of late effects for multiple treatments. Knowledge of late effects of newer treatments will contribute to earlier diagnosis and improved management of late effects and to new research into future treatments. The BRC also aims to translate late effects incidence risk tables into online late effects risk prediction tools to enable interactive and personalised informed discussion between patients and clinicians on risk of a range of late effects.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will focus on late treatment effects for lymphoma and expand the research portfolio to studies addressing treatment effects involving other tumour types. They will work closely with the Theme Lead and Deputy Theme Lead for the BRC Cancer Treatment Effects theme to provide leadership of the emerging portfolio of late effects studies in line with the Theme aims.
