Consultant Clinical Scientist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Clinical Scientist, fixed term contract (15 months), to cover maternity leave in the clinical Biochemistry section of the Blood Sciences department, based at the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden Hospital. You will join a team of three principal clinical scientists, with an STP trainee due to join the team in September. The successful candidate will work alongside the clinical scientist team as well as the Blood Sciences Operations manager and management team. You will have a clinical leadership role in the laboratory, providing clinical, technical, and scientific advice to a wide range of colleagues. You will also be expected to drive forwards research within the department and collaborate with clinical colleagues on research, development, and innovation. Extensive experience within the field of clinical biochemistry is required, as are good communication skills. Full FRCPath is essential. You will participate in the duty biochemist rota, out-of-hours on call provision, clinical liaison and teaching.

The post-holder is to provide clinical direction and management of a comprehensive, efficient and specialised Biochemistry service, serving cancer patients at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RMH), the Southwest London and Surrey region, the UK and abroad.

To be the scientific lead for biochemistry and work collaboratively with the Service Manager to ensure continued strategic direction for biochemistry. To foster development of an innovative service in line with the Trust’s overall strategy and needs supporting Trust diagnostic, clinical trials and research requirements.

To act in consultant clinical scientist capacity providing clinical liaison and scientific leadership, knowledge, skills and expertise, keeping abreast of scientific knowledge and current practice in all areas covered by the laboratory, maintaining membership of relevant clinical and scientific steering groups, societies and committees, representing the Trust and national and international meetingsT

       To establish and be responsible for the standards of practice in accordance with recognised criteria and obtaining and maintaining accreditation to ISO 15189 standards for biochemistry. 

       To participate in monitoring the quality and efficiency of service delivery. 

       Ensure the implementation of the quality policy.

       To ensure that the clinical governance needs of the Trust are met in regard to the Biochemistry service.

       To be responsible for initiating, supervising, and participating in clinical audits.

  • BSc degree in relevant science.
  • MSc or equivalent in Biochemistry.
  • Clinical Scientist HCPC registration.
  • Fellowship of The Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath)

  • PhD in Biochemistry.

Experience

  • Significant experience in clinical biochemistry
  • Track record of research in field through publications in high-impact journals.
  • Evidence of ample experience issuing clinical reports
  • Evidence of participation in the design, standardisation and quality control of relevant laboratory investigations.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Evidence of understanding of relevant laboratory Health & Safety procedures and risk assessment

Skills Abilities/knowledge

  • Ability to express and communicate ideas and findings clearly in all circumstances including email and phone.
  • Proven ability to present to internal and external audiences, including postgraduate level and professional bodies.
