The team also provides on treatment support for complex pain and symptoms. They also have a close working relationship with paediatric drug development team to support children entering clinical and drug trials.
The service has a well-established regular bereaved parents group which contributes to the paediatric palliative care service development and research.
The service provides symptom care support to any child, on or off treatment, with complex symptoms and facilitates provision of palliative care in all settings. Often the service provides a dual model of care approach with palliative care supporting alongside on-going curative or treatment targeted options. At the time of transition to palliation when symptoms are beginning to impact, a palliative care multidisciplinary team meeting is held at the Royal Marsden. When the child’s condition starts to develop significant symptoms, or they are entering the deteriorating phase of their illness, a GP meeting at the family’s GP surgery is held with local services and family members (if they wish to attend). The GP meeting is held in order to identify roles and responsibilities and co-ordinate community and acute services (if required) to ensure care is delivered to meet the child or young person’s needs. Advance care, symptom management and emergency care plans are completed, as appropriate, for children receiving palliation and end of life care.

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.

Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia: a progressive and complex condition that can be devastating for the whole family. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Every day, Admiral Nurses help families up and down the country to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
